Via Sarah Palin:

The government will bend the rules left and right to harass targeted taxpayers, conservative patriots, selected journalists, etc., but it will strictly exercise inconsistent and subjective rules to deny a child a shot at life. And they called us liars when we spoke of “death panels” – faceless bureaucrats coming between you and your doctor to make life and death decisions about a loved one’s survival. It doesn’t sound so far fetched anymore, does it?

Here’s the article Palin linked to called Sebelius won’t intervene in girl’s transplant case:

The U.S. health secretary said she won’t intervene in an “incredibly agonizing” transplant decision about a dying Pennsylvania girl, noting that three other children in the same hospital are just as sick.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told a congressional panel Tuesday that medical experts should make those decisions.

However, relatives of 10-year-old Sarah Murnaghan said Sebelius’ remarks confused them because they want a policy change for all pre-adolescent children awaiting lung transplants, not just Sarah.

The Newtown Square girl has been hospitalized at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for three months with end-stage cystic fibrosis and is on a ventilator. Her family wants children younger than 12 to be eligible for adult lungs because so few pediatric lungs are available.

Under current policy, only patients 12 and over can join the list. But Sarah’s transplant doctors say she is medically eligible for an adult lung.

The change would add perhaps 20 children from ages 8 to 11 to the adult waiting list, which has more than 1,600 people on it, according to Sharon Ruddock, Sarah’s aunt.

“One moment they say we’re asking for an exception for Sarah. The next moment they say we’re asking for sweeping changes and it has to be studied,” Ruddock said Tuesday.

Sebelius has called for a review of pediatric transplant policies, but the Murnaghans say Sarah doesn’t have time for that.

“I’m begging you. … She has three to five weeks to live. Please suspend the rules,” Rep. Lou Barletta, R-Pa., urged Sebelius at a House Education and the Workforce Committee hearing on her department’s budget.

Sebelius conceded the case was an “incredibly agonizing situation” but said many complex factors go into the transplant-list formula.

Politico adds this:

“I’m begging you,” Rep. Lou Barletta (R-Pa.) told Sebelius at a House hearing Tuesday morning, asking her to suspend the transplant rules until they can be revisited. “Sarah has three to five weeks to live. Time is running out.” The child has cystic fibrosis.

At the hearing, Sebelius called the situation “agonizing” and said she had talked to the girl’s mother. She has ordered a review of the policy, which she acknowledged would take too long to have any impact on this girl’s situation, but said it wasn’t her place to pick and choose transplant recipients.

“I can’t imagine anything worse than one individual getting to pick who lives and who dies,” she said. Sebelius said putting Sarah next in line would disadvantage other young people who have also been waiting for transplants — including three in the same area. Helping one child could possibly hurt another.

Some experts agree that the lung allocation policy may need to be revisited; it has been for kidney and liver transplants. But they say no snap decisions should be made because of the media glare.

Politico goes into more detail about the policy itself if you want to keep reading it.

badbadlibs Sebelius thinking. Damn, if we could have only mandated abortion after knowing the risk of cystic fibrosis, damn!

The quote I’m not seeing in this article, (maybe it’s after the link is this one:
“I would suggest, sir, that, again, this is an incredibly agonizing situation where someone lives and someone dies,” Sebelius replied. “The medical evidence and the transplant doctors who are making the rule — and have had the rule in place since 2005 making a delineation between pediatric and adult lungs, because lungs are different that other organs — that it’s based on the survivability [chances].”
So we have an immediate need for a lung, but because there are “rules” in place that prevent them from installing an adult lung, a lung that very well might save the girl’s life, the rules take precedence over the girl’s life?? Are you KIDDING ME?
Who are regulations for? Bureaucrats or real live people? If it comes between the decision to save a life or follow a rule, why is it even a question? SAVE THE LIFE!

Politco: “But they say no snap decisions should be made because of the media glare.”
‘Media glare’? The only reason Politco is covering this story is because it’s occupied some time on  Fox News, the rest of the (so called) ‘media’ certainly hasn’t put any time in it, and the fact that a prominent ‘Obama-bot’ (Sebelius) is involved in it.

    • nosilasunny

Snap decisions? There is no years or months at this point and they are more concerned about rules and decisions than saving a child’s life. The very nature of the situation calls for a accelerated decision. What happened to save the children?

    • Orangeone

tinlizzieowner Wonder if Politico would have said that if the child were black or an illegal alien.

You know as well as I do that if this was a ‘poor Black child’, Sharpton and Jackson would be on the Capitol steps, claiming it would be ‘racist’ for Sebelius not to change ‘the rules’.

If it were Sebelius who had a child that needed this life saving transplant, somehow, I get the feeling that an “exception” would be made.  It’s sickening!  Pretty soon the IRS will be in charge of NObamacare!  Better prepare to make the right political donations if you expect actual medical care and not the fast track to the Death Panels! :-(

    • Orangeone

      WolfieUSA Or know someone with a doctor in the family :}

  • M_Minnesota

    Cruella Sebelius

    • Amjean

You called it right!  I hope the media starts calling her “Cruella”.   I don’t know the circumstances, however, to not appoint a special panel or “something” to try and help these young children is heartless.
I have a friend who recently died when her lung transplant failed after seven or eight years.  I was told that a lung transplant only lasts for five or six years generally.  She could not have another one because the first one created so much scar tissue.  I was told this was common.  She was an adult; not sure how this “rule” applies to children.  Regardless, Cruella should have shown empathy and tried to do something.

  • nosilasunny

Obviously she has never had a family member on a transplant list. It is nerve wracking. And this is someone’s child, not some statistic. I can’t imagine having a child needing an organ especially one so close to the end. This isn’t a game. There are no do overs with life and death. Why is there any argument? The doctor says yes! Save her life! How cruel and coldhearted can one be?

    • slicerdicer

She’s not one bit worried about one of her family members. They would magically appear on top of the list to receive the transplant….

      • Keyes

        slicerdicer
        Exactly.

When I heard this story in the news I thought about Sarah Palins “Death Panels” and I wondered if Sarah was aware of this story, an low and behold I just find out she wrote about it on her Facebook, way to go Sarah, this will bring the story even more attention!

  • Keyes

The federal gov’t has NO Constitutional authority to mandate squat. They have  NO right coming between us and our doctor’s medical decisions. This should be up to the doctors and family. The federal gov’t had no business deciding the age one has to be to be on the list.
The feds need to get completely out of our private lives.

    • bfunk

dorsaimail You speak my mind! I’m getting tired of this banana republic crap.

  • K-Bob

Normally in these situations, we should expect a “panel” of some sort to form, properly composed of the child’s doctor, a few senior associates, the child’s parents, and if necessary, an attorney for the child.  SUch an ad hoc panel might well decide to forgo a particular treatment, based on their best guess at any potential outcome.  The decision might be difficult for the parents to hear.  But most importantly, the parents should have the right to seek help from another doctor or hospital, which occasionally will produce a better outcome.  This isn’t a “death panel,” it’s just the right way to make the decision: by those closest to the patient and the case.

That’s what we had before the cornhusker kickback and whatever blackmail they have on John Roberts allowed Obamacare to be crammed down our throats.
Now we have someone far away, unrelated, unelected, and unnecessary, interposing themselves in a case in which they are neither Constitutionally allowed to become involved (regardless of what the Roberts Court ruled), nor morally or ethically justified in acting in any way related to this case.  This is the Orwellian death panel in it’s basic, repugnant, inhumane form.
Welcome to Orwell’s nightmare everyone.  I suggest you travel well armed.

  • kong1967

From what I understand kids are physically able to use an adult’s lung, yet they are banned from them.  This puts them at an extreme disadvantage to the average person needing a transplant.
The policies need to be reviewed.
Sebelius was not this far off the deep end when she was my state’s Governor.  I was glad to get rid of her but now that she takes direction from the Communist in Chief she is a freaking nightmare.

How is allowing a child to go on a list for an adult lung, “choosing who lives or who dies”?!  If the child’s doctors medically determined that an adult lung would be appropriate, she should be allowed to be on the list to at least give her a fighting chance!  Welcome to the Sebilius death panel…all the logic of a frog…and proof positive that the same government that can’t run the post office efficiently should have ZERO business in health care!

The Governor is right on this subject and she is calling the Obama administration out – she was right on Death panels – just look at the comments from the secretary “…Health and http://therightscoop.com/death-panels-sarah-palin-slams-hhs-sebelius-for-not-intervening-in-lung-transplant-for-young-girl/# Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told a congressional panel Tuesday that medical experts should make those decisions..” Also read the law Sebelius could use a waiver like she has done on many other issues – what a tool

Leave it to Gov. Palin to stand up for what is right.  Other elected officials are too busy sitting on their ass in DC to see who can get the most power.  Anyone in a position of authority knows little about actual reality and just wants to dictate and doesn’t even do that well.
Can you imagine this woman in the WH? I sure can.
