As as I’m sure most of our learned readers know, the actual words in the Constitution are intended to protect the church from the state, not the other way around. And in fact the very phrase “separation of church and state” comes from a letter Jefferson wrote to a Baptist church to reassure THEM that the state would not be interfering in their matters.
