Egyptian student jailed for ‘insulting Islam’ on Facebook

el-sisi

Ever notice the dark spot on al-Sisi’s forehead? Generally that is one clue out of several that signifies a Muslim terrorist or terrorism supporter. But we know from Sisi’s words and actions that he isn’t one of them. In fact he fights them harder than our own president.

So what does that dark spot signify? Well it should tell you something about how seriously he takes Islam. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that, under his leadership, that you can’t insult Islam and get away with it in Egypt:

YAHOO NEWS – An Egyptian court has sentenced a student to one year in jail for insulting Islam and promoting atheism on a Facebook page, his lawyer and judicial sources said Wednesday.

It is the second such ruling in Egypt since January when another 21-year-old was jailed for three years for declaring on Facebook that he is an atheist.

Judicial sources said that Sharif Gaber “was sentenced to one-year in prison for insulting Islam and promoting atheism, but could be freed on a bail of 1,000 pounds ($130, 117 euros) until his appeal trial”.

The sentence was handed down on Monday by a criminal court in the northeastern city of Ismailiya, where Gaber studies literature at university.

There are many things to like about el-Sisi and what he’s doing to fight the Muslim Brotherhood in his country. But he’s still a fervent Muslim and Egypt is still a Muslim country and there are definitely things we won’t agree with them on, and this is one of them.

If you can’t insult Islam or draw a photo of Muhammad, then there really is no free speech in Egypt.
