UPDATE: The Blaze edited the video so that it cuts out right before the guy kills himself.

And here is Shep Smith’s apology:

UPDATE – I’ve been asked by several not to show the video. My initial thought was simply that it was out there already – even by Drudge, and didn’t think much past that. But the guy does have a family so out of good taste I’ve removed the video.

My apologies for the oversight.

Explanation and apology from Shep Smith, via The Blaze:

“Well, some explaining to do. While we were taking that car chase and showing it to you live when the guy pulled over and got out of the vehicle, we went on delay. That‘s why I didn’t talk for about 10 seconds. We created a five-second delay as if you were to bleep back your DVR five seconds, that was what we did with the picture we were showing you so that we would see in the studio what was happening five seconds before you did, so that if anything went horribly wrong we’d be able to cut away from it without subjecting you to it and we really messed up. And we’re all very sorry. That didn’t belong on TV. We took every precaution we knew how to take to keep that from being on TV and I personally apologize to you that that happened.

“Sometimes we see a lot of things that we don‘t let get to you because it’s not time appropriate. It’s insensitive. It’s just wrong. And that was wrong. And that won’t happen again on my watch. And I”m sorry.”

  • HARP2

Saved the taxpayers some money as far as I`m concerned.

    • stage9

Oh c’mon dude that’s not right. You’re better than that!

      • HARP2

Did you see the chase ?
Did you see how many peoples lives were put at risk by this idiot ?
Children were probably in some of those other cars.

This guy had a choice and you`re damn right. I could care less that this scum is no longer here.

        • stage9

And there is a justice system to deal with that. We are NOT LIBERALS! We are civilized human beings. At least we’re supposed to be! I can tell you of hundreds of stories of guys just like this one who are in prison for much the same reason who have so totally been changed by the grace of God that I would put them up against any other good citizen of this country. They may have to remain behind bars the rest of their lives, they may have to face the death penalty for their crimes, but they’ve been changed, and THAT is the difference between America and a barbaric civilization like the islamic East.

I am not a cold-hearted godless liberal nor a barbaric islamist. I believe justice should be served. And that man, whatever he did, should’ve paid for his crimes. But I don’t believe in vigilantism and I don’t believe in glorying in the death of anyone.

We as Conservatives are better than this. It’s what separates US from THEM!

          • Zaphenath_Paneah_II

            Too late! :(

            LOL

          • TugboatPhil

I don’t know that he was glorying in the guy’s suicide, but if someone is going to kill themselves I’d much rather they just do it at home and not risk so many others. The choice to end his life was his own. We still live in a country where we can weigh in on his actions, since he chose to take them public.

I knew a friend of my cousin who is forever changed from being t-boned at an intersection by just such a driver. He spent over a year in surgeries and therapy and will never have anything close to the life he previously did and all he was doing was obeying the traffic laws. If he saw it coming it was right before the impact.

          • CO2isGood

I am a retired CO, and for every one you can show us that have been changed in prison for the better, I can show you ten that are back in within a year.

Being a compassionate conservative is fine, for those that deserve compassion. Being a chump is a whole other story, let the bleeding-heart Liberals cry this fool a river.

Now, I don’t know this guys story, and I don’t care. He made his choice and saved us all some tax dollars.

            • Ryan Mobley

My friend, please don’t confuse our comments with “compassionate conservatism.” I fully agree that this man committed a reckless crime and put innocent individuals in harms way. For that he should have been punished to the fullest extent of the law.

The area that we seem to be separating on is his suicide. Did he have the right to do it? Sure. Did he make a choice? Absolutely. Should we glorify in it to save a few tax dollars? I say no. I see these as two separate arguments. We can always work to change the justice system and save individuals hard earned tax dollars. I am all for that. What we cannot do, however, is bring this man back. That is the point in contention. Thank you for your time.

              • CO2isGood

Thank you for a pleasant and considered reply.

My lack of concern for this fellow, and of those that bemoan his public suicide is a conditioned response. I do not attach any more significance to his death, than to any video that depicts hunting kills, and actually find it much less disturbing than seeing an animal killed for sport.

Glorification is a loaded term. I prefer to see it as a lack of compassion, with some associated humor thrown in.

Also bringing people like this back sounds like a bad idea.

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_DY6RM4VFWK4LD43MTEA7ULLRQ4 James

Clearly, the man had problems. It is not to far out there to say he did everyone a favor.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Steven-Valdez/1806887704 Steven Valdez

Agree no one would have sympathy for this a-hole killing someone else. Today people are lucky it only himself.

        • DebbyX

Some people have problems that only God can sort out.

      • Zaphenath_Paneah_II

Don’t reply. Just let it go dude. Grab some tobacco, start chewing and just let it go.

(If you’re reading this, its because HARP2 has responded back to you and I’m trying to save you the agony of the senseless argument that will no doubt ensue.)

      • aZjimbo

He’s correct. One less idiot in the world.

    • Ryan Mobley

The human soul is far more important than saving money.

      • stage9

Exactly! Now what? For those of us who know beyond a shadow of doubt that there is an eternity that this man now has to contend with, this is VERY sad indeed.

        • Ryan Mobley

Amen. Thank God for his Son.

      • tvlgds

The guy carjacked somebody, shot at the police, and his “soul” is more important. I’d say he lost his soul long ago. I’m sorry for that, but he endangered a whole lot of innocent people with a gun and with his reckless driving on the interstate.

        • Ryan Mobley

No one argues that he did not endanger far too many individuals with his reckless acts. That much is apparent. However, it is a shame that it ended the way it did. That is the main difference I and stage9 have with the original poster. We do not glorify or cheer for a man’s death just to save a few dollars. This does not make us “compassionate conservatives”, in fact, I despise that term. The fact that we value a man’s soul is a direct reflection of our heart attitude and belief towards what God said in his Word.

Take from this what you will, but I will NEVER glorify in another man’s death. No matter what he did. I respectfully dissent…

          • tvlgds

I’m not glorifying or cheering the man’s death, I’m just not losing any sleep over it. Had he wiped out innocent people while driving like an idiot, or shot the police after he stopped, then I’d lose sleep for those people. I also despise the term “compassionate conservatives.” One does not have to be conservative to be compassionate, nor does one have to be liberal to be a bleeding heart. I’m not big on pigeonholes or stereotypes. All that said, you do give me food for thought, regarding heart attitude.

Unfortunately, there is no “unlike” button for your comment.

      • Zaphenath_Paneah_II

        Agreed. Sad comment.

PS Scoop, that doesn’t mean we want the new ‘Disqus’ format, which I believe allows for a ‘dislike’ option. When people who come on this site say they’re conservative, they mean it right to the T, even when it comes to a blog’s commenting format.

  • http://twitter.com/RichMcCreedy Richard McCreedy

Gotta be honest, I have no problems with a network airing this kind of stuff. It’s disturbing, but man we used to have highly public executions and they served a purpose. Airing this type of stuff can help serve a purpose too, it can let people who are thinking about suicide get a nice, close-up look of it all and really bring the finality of the event home.

    • cupenny

And it also can serve another purpose–to let people who are considering committing a crime get a look at the consequences of that act.

  • Army_Pilot1967

Wow, I have to wonder what that was all about for a person to pull out a pistol and kill himself apparently without hesitation. Once he pulled the trigger it was all over for him, no second chances.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Steven-Valdez/1806887704 Steven Valdez

he was driving at 110 mph before, I’m guessing probably on drugs, no fear, and didn’t want to go back to prison..

      • stage9

That’s a lot of guessing my friend.

      • maynardb50

I am thinking most would rather go back to prison. Apparently this fella had a tortured mind.

    • WordsFailMe

Well he knew what he’d done and determined what he deserved and the rest of us will have to wait to find out.

Maybe the sheriff’s office can get to this investigation faster than Obama’s FBI got to Libya. Probably this guy will have a deeper, more thorough and more transparent investigation than a murdered Obama-appointed ambassador and 3 American patriots will ever see.

I’m sure that Obama, Holder and the Democrats, progressives, CBC racists, Black Panthers, La Raza and the communists care a lot more about how much traitorous nonsense they can get out of this fellow’s demise than they do about the ambassador and patriots.

I can’t wait to hear Stephanie Cutter’ spin…

      • Army_Pilot1967

I respect your opinion, but I don’t think obama/his administration care about a suicidal citizen or our murdered embassy personnel. I don’t know what obama cares about, other than remaining as president with its powers and its perks. He needs to go back to Chicago, Indonesia, or Kenya…any place, but the White House.

  • http://twitter.com/Jacamina1 Jac C

Ok… man shot himself; but is that the worse thing people have seen in their lives? I know watching my parents or my nephew die was more traumatic. This guy chose to do this; I have no mercy for those that want to commit suicide. Suicide is being a coward and not standing up and taking what life has to offer.

    • tvlgds

Thankfully, it wasn’t suicide by cop. He did the deed himself.

    • Rshill7

Death also offers two diametrically opposed options. I would not want to face The Great White Throne of Judgement when my final earthly act was murder.

Some people think they can escape life’s problems by killing themselves. I think they’ll be unpleasantly surprised when they jump from life’s current heat into an eternal fire.

They “escape” worldly problems to face an eternity of intractable suffering. That’s what I believe.

      • Conservative_Hippie

Your post is a sad commentary Rshill, we need to reach as many as we can for Christ…that’s all that really matters in life.

    • DebbyX

It must be really gratifying to be up on that pedestal you’ve put yourself on.

I always say, walk a mile in my (their) shoes.

      • CO2isGood

Better yet, just jack some self-righteous fool and drive that mile in their car.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Steven-Valdez/1806887704 Steven Valdez

maybe i’m being a insensitive prick this afternoon but I’m glad this criminal did self justice to himself… and the part with Shep saying get off get off get off get off then swtiches to a commerical of a guy saying my name is doug, is freaking hilarious to me..

    • Conservative_Hippie

You know Steven, my feelings are mixed. On the one hand I agree he took justice into his own hands and now he won’t be driving down the highway at 110 mph putting others at risk, but on the other hand it’s obvious he was a torutured soul in need of help (spiritual help in my opinion).

I used to work as a first reponder/security at a retirement home and I learned quickly to separate my emotions from the circumstance at hand. One of the ways I did this was to find some outlet and usually it involved comedy or just learning to laugh at things. And so when I saw that commercial for Doug, “hi i’m doug and i have mesothelioma” I had to crack a chuckle also, maybe not necessarily because it was funny, but because the emotions hit a pressure valve.

  • stage9

There is NEVER EVER a time in life where there isn’t a way out or there is no hope for tomorrow. And trust me, I know personally.

    This is so sad.

    • DebbyX

What about the terminally ill? Endless pain and suffering……………….

    • freenca

I saw it live today, and it is terribly sad as you say stage9. We cannot know what was in this man’s heart or mind, we can only hope that he is in the Lord’s presence now. Praying for his soul.

      • Conservative_Hippie

        agreed.

  • Skye Lowry

As today’s generation likes to say “Epic fail”. I’m no fan of Shep Smith, but I do feel bad for him. He totally didn’t see that coming.

    • Skye Lowry

Just so there’s no confusion I was referring to Fox News’ handling of the situation, not the life of this young man.

    • tvlgds

They “see it coming” every time they air hours of these car chases. Any one of them could end up being a bloody mess, yet they continue to air them. This is the first one that’s ended badly, but they do it for the ratings. The media mantra is “if it bleeds, it leads.”

  • Spartan4Palin

This isn’t the first time they captured someone being shot on live tv. Remember that hostage situation at that strip mall. Guy holding the lady in the parking lot and somehow got away from him and the cops shot him? The famous LA bank robbery we saw the guy take his life in the end.

If this guy shot at cops and fatally wounded them, and then if he took his own life, then it saved others cops the time and bullet to take him down.

I never want to be too sensitized by things like this. But this guy was not exactly just ‘speeding’ along.

    • Spartan4Palin

Look and I know it’s a sad deal and no we don’t know what made him do it? I can’t imagine the carnage he could have created in that car going at those speeds and taking out lives along the way.

      • tvlgds

It looked like the engine had blown well before he got off the road, so we all knew it was going to end soon. Didn’t see the suicide coming, but knew it was over.

        • MaxineCA

Although it appeared that way, he was actually driving on a dirt road when you saw that.

          • tvlgds

No, he was actually on the freeway blowing white smoke before he went off I-10- probably why he left the interstate in the first place. I saw the entire thing.

    • WordsFailMe

He was an free American making a choice for himself very unlike Americans who died, hands tied, throats sawed through by a baboon with a steak knife.

  • justplainbob

I was watching Fox when they broadcast this. Supposedly the delay did not work. Either way, it was not graphic. I have mixed feelings on this. I won’t have any bad dreams tonight as a result of seeing it. This guy was on something…some sort of drugs. You could tell by the way he was behaving just before he did himself in.

  • tvlgds

I saw it happen. I had the sound off because I was on the phone w/my best friend in Ca. The footage was from a chopper so it was far away, the guy ran, put a gun to his head, and the next thing we saw was him falling. No blood, no guts.

    • http://boogieforward.us/ K-Bob

Guess we’ll have to watch those Itchy and Scratchy cartoons they make up for the Simpsons.

      • tvlgds

I don’t watch The Simpsons so I have no idea what you’re talking about. :)

  • opinionatedhermit

If this was NBC, instead of hearing an apology the video would have been doctored to show Dick Cheney shooting the poor man…

    • tvlgds

LOL! The sad part is, you’re probably not far off the mark.

    • Zaphenath_Paneah_II

More like, an MSNBC anchorman somewhere would type the suicide victim’s name into Google and then come on air with a statement saying ‘Well, I’ve been doing some *research* and I believe he was a member of the Arizona Tea Party…”
      -_-

      (Remember that?)

  • Smith Smith

I think you wll have some that say show it, some that will say don’t. Each side has good points.

For me I watch Fox and sometimes my kids will come down stairs to ask me something and I wouldn’t want that on at the same time for them to see it. This is mostly do to age, ya at some point it is fine to show it. But my son is at an age to see what happen, but not fully get it and regardless of how I try to explan what he saw. He will let it foster and bug him for sometime. He is not at the age to approperly process that type of grapchic display. Going to a funeral and seeing somone is dead is much different then someone killing them self live!!!!

  • az_wins

come on people its not like it was a close up to many of you are making a big deal out of nothing. he plugged himself and we didnt see anything very close. either way he was going to die he had already shot at cops you actually think they would let him shoot at them again? get over it they choose the life of crime and he paid the price by himself

    • WordsFailMe

I’m with it az. This didn’t bother me at all. Driving like a mad man on streets where innocent people commute should be a capitol crime anyway. This was a drone, a cull and he’s gone.

Want your heart to break? Watch videos where Srians rebels, who are actauly al queda, Saudi Arabians Iranians and every other baboon with an opposing thumb is shootinting at Syrain soldiers. Watch soe of those old vids’ of WWII where an American B-17 or P-47 is shot down or a marine slumps over on his weapon at Iwo Jima.

      That hurts.

Criminals dying on TV should be a reality show.

  • BMartin1776

won’t show vid out of respect to the family?! WHAT! What about respect to the victim? Why is there this need to protect criminals fate/ image/ family? BTW what he did was a cowards way out. Do the crime do the time!

  • Zaphenath_Paneah_II

The Lord is the only hope for this dark world.

  • http://twitter.com/ozziecastillo Stewie

Although I would not like to have seen this, I don’t see the reason for the newscaster’s reaction. They put this on the air for the spectacle, and when something does happen, all of a sudden it’s wrong to air. Stuff like this should be on the news, that’s what the news is for, not for opinion and misleading the people with a narrative.

  • http://boogieforward.us/ K-Bob

Do they really need to show “cop” footage on the news?

    It’s pure tabloid fodder.

Mind, once in a while the tabloids are fun to peek at. Especially the British ones.

But not on a real news program.

Besides, you know they are busy as h*ll, NOT reporting on the mayhem and violence committed by certain members of the public.

    • http://www.therightscoop.com/ The Right Scoop

It’s a car chase. Who doesn’t love a good car chase?

  • CitizenVetUSA

Many people have life issues that pile upon over time and become burdensome resulting in self solution.

I was viewing Sheppard Smith when the guy turned off the highway into the wash area and began to rummage in the vehicle for the weapon.

The rest is a sad visual event of a desperate man. I prayed to GOD for his sole to take.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_YTW457NVTTIB2NPVUGR7WXAXFM General Lee

      Yes, his soul, too.

  • E. Lee Zimmerman

Please. Fox has shown far worse on SONS OF ANARCHY, people. This happened at a distance. I had to watch it thrice just to see what the guy was doing (d@mn my old eyes!).

I’m having a hard time really caring about this “story.” The guy was clearly breaking the law in the lead-up to the tragic moment. Unless you folks know more than I do about this guy (was he on drugs? does he have a family? how many others did he hurt?), I don’t understand what all the fuss is about.

Clearly, if he WAS on drugs, he chose to take ‘em, didn’t he?

I mean … I hate to sound heartless, sure, but are you more upset with the guy who did wrong OR with Fox for making an accident by airing it? This seems small to me, but no man is an island.

  • http://navalwarfare.blogspot.com/ Libertyship46

Sometimes today’s media just gives you too much information. I don’t really think we need to watch somebody blow their brains out on live TV. My cable TV has hundreds of channels on it and I’m finding that I’m watching less and less TV these days. Maybe this is why.

    • PVG

I watch one recorded program a week…..period! Sad commentary on the state of cable TV.

  • http://hehasfailed.wordpress.com/ HopeHeFails

Hey Shep you dawg….I hope you stew in your own puke!!!

  • TxGold

    Big Deal!!!

  • tvlgds

I’m actually calling BS on Shep Smith today, based on the quotes below. As I said, I saw the incident, but the tv was muted because I was on the phone and heard none of this. If he was truly scared and nervous about what was going to happen, he would have cut away, and reported the rest of the news. Fox spends entirely too much time on these high speed chases all over the country, and it’s got to be all about ratings. They all KNOW the potential for tragedy is very high, yet they stay glued to it till the end, frequently on split screen, and it’s usually during Shep’s shows. Well, he finally got to see the tragic ending he’s obviously been waiting for so he could have another histrionic meltdown on national tv like he did after Katrina. Maybe now, the policy at Fox will be to stop airing all these chases. They are not national news.

“Smith was narrating the video and clearly had his doubts about what was being shown from the moment the man stopped the car. “This scares me,” he said.

“You wait for the end of these things and you worry about how they may end up,” he said. “This makes me a little nervous, I got to tell you. A little nervous.”

After the man shot himself, Fox’s picture quickly cut to Smith, who was shouting “get off, get off, get off, get off.”

    • http://twitter.com/cfallon57 Cheryl Fallon

      I agree completely!
