One thing that ISIS has never been able to get from one of the two biggest organizations in the Muslim world is recognition of their Islamic caliphate, as the Muslim Brotherhood has always rejected their caliphate as illegitimate.
But that’s not going to be a problem for Erdogan, as he clearly has the blessing of the Muslim Brotherhood.
Yusuf al-Qaradawi, top cleric and spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, is now calling Erdogan by the title of ‘Sultan’. He did so at an Istanbul Festival called ‘Thanks Turkey’ near the end of April, designed to thank Erdogan for aiding the Syrian refugees and defending the cause of Gaza and Jerusalem.

In the festival, the spiritual head of the Muslim Brotherhood, Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi gave a fiery sermon speaking on how they must revive the image and banner of the Ottomans and how no one can make war with the giant of Islam and how through Islam “Turkey’s might will conquer the rest of the nations”.
“You will only subdue all nations through this religion [Islam]” said Qaradawi adding “you will revive, you will revive”. “The Muslim world is more than what they claim” said Qaradawi adding that “there are 1.7 billion Muslims”. He went on sharing how a dead history is reviving and on how Ottoman Sultans were the best defenders of Islam and now with 1.7 billion Muslims now they should give allegiance to whom he called “Sultan Erdogan”.
Throughout his speech Qaradawi uttered words that could only come out of the pages of John’s Revelations. The Tunisian Telegraph shared his statement which summarized it all:
“Who can make war with Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan? He became the Muslim world’s defender fighting in the name of Islam and the Koran and Sharia. He speaks standing firm in the faces of tyrants to tell them NO!”
Perhaps this should ring a bell: “Who is like unto the beast? Who is able to make war with him?”
This is no small potatoes. Qaradawi has millions upon millions of followers in the Middle East and speaks for the Muslim Brotherhood. He was also the banned Muslim cleric who showed up in Egypt’s Tahrir Square after the overthrow of Mubarak and held a mass call to prayer of over 2 million people:
Qaradawi’s mentor was none other than Hassan al Banna, the Muslim who founded the Muslim Brotherhood. And remember, the Muslim Brotherhood was founded in the late 1920s with the sole purpose of re-establishing the Ottoman caliphate that was dismantled in 1923.
So when the top religious leader of the Muslim Brotherhood is calling Erdogan the ‘Sultan’ and is also talking about this dead Ottoman history reviving, you better believe this is a big deal in the Muslim world.
And for all of you who may not realize it, the title ‘Sultan’ is the same as ‘Caliph’. So when Qaradawi calls Erdogan ‘Sultan’, he is calling him ‘Caliph’!
So after the 9th century, the “caliphate” was viewed as an umbrella of multiple polities with sultans and scholars at the center of power. This changed once the Ottoman sultans defeated the Mamluks in 1517 and assumed the title of caliph – after this point, the title of sultan was “joined” with the title of caliph.
Things are moving quickly in Turkey. Pretty soon Erdogan’s will rewrite the constitution to enshrine his power as Sultan and he will begin establishing his revived Ottoman caliphate in the Middle East.
