Not only does almost half of Turkey’s population believe you should be punished for insulting Islam’s prophet, but a solid 20% agrees with the use of violence in the name of Islam:
TODAY’S ZAMAN – A full 20 percent of the Turkish public approves of the use of violence in the name of Islam, though a majority of the public does not approve, a survey conducted in January by the Ankara-based MetroPOLL Strategic and Social Research Center has revealed.
When asked whether they would approve of the use of violence in the name of Islam in some cases, 73.6 percent of the respondents said they would not, while 20.1 percent said they would and 6.3 percent said they have no idea or did not answer.

To a question about the real victims of the Charlie Hebdo attack, only 21.7 percent of the people said they were the 12 people who were killed in the attack, while 42.6 percent said the real victim is the Islamic world. Around 24 percent of the respondents said Muslims living in Europe were the real victims of the Charlie Hebdo attack. Those who think the real victim of the Paris attack is the Islamic world is as high as 55.3 percent among the supporters of the AK Party while only 15.4 percent of the AK Party supporters think the 12 French people killed in the attack were the real victims.
According to the pollsters, shockingly, the majority of people do not see the 12 people killed in the attack as the real victims. “It is understood that society’s tendency to believe in conspiracy theories prevents them from seeing the real victims,” they said.The respondents to the survey were also questioned on whether they approve of punishment for insulting religion. Around 49 percent of the respondents answered in the negative, while 43.6 percent said they approve of punishment for those who insult religion. Those approving of such punishment among AK Party supporters turned out to be as high as 61 percent, while only 21.9 percent of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) and 37.9 percent of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) supporters said they would approve of punishment for those insulting religion.
So much for Turkey being moderate.
