In this really interesting discussion about how race changed the election and helped Trump win, even “Never Trumper” Rich Lowry admits that the left and the press is wrong to identify the white working class as racist and sexist.

While I don’t want to characterize these voters as all racist, I find this argument point not very convincing. What Lowry says is that there was a huge swing vote from Obama in working class districts in 2008 who voted for Trump in 2012 – he concludes from this that they couldn’t be animated by racism. But that assumes that these are the exact same people, which is absurd. There are plenty of those Obama voters who stayed home, and new people who showed up for the new vote.
