Obamacare’s medical device tax claims 100 more jobs

It’s gonna be a long four years:

WASHINGTON TIMES – Global medical technology firm Smith & Nephew announced Thursday the layoff of almost 100 workers at its Tennessee and Massachusetts plants — and placed blame for the drawdown firmly at the feet of Obamacare.

The London-based company makes orthopedic reconstruction products. It faces a 2.3 percent tax on its medical devices, due to Obamacare mandates, Fox News reports.

In a statement, the company said: “Unfortunately, and in order to absorb this cost burden into or business, this has meant less than 100 positions have been made redundant across various departmental functions in our Tennessee and Massachusetts sites,” according to Fox News.

  • I hope all the ones laid off were ones who voted for dear leader.

    • Joe

OOPS! – I just said that too!

    • Don

The sad truth is the ones that voted for Obama are the ones who are already hurt the worse. The statistics are coming out that the 93% of blacks, who proved racism is alive and well within the black race by voting for Obama, are in worse shape since he was first elected and the signs are they will only get worse. Obama used them to get power and will use them to extend his power. Until racism is abated, racists will always be used as tools to keep their leaders” in power.

    • sjmom

They may not have because my son who works for one said these companies fought Obamacare tooth and nail.

      • 🙁

      • sybilll

Yep sj, I have friends that work there as well. All are dyed in the wool Conservatives. The thing people don’t understand is that this is a tax (more like an assessment) of 2.3% on all medical devices, even if the company makes not a single dollar in profit. Arrgh

        • Orangeone

Correct sybilll the 2.3% tax is on GROSS SALES (not even net sales)

      • notsofastthere

The companies finances are directly affected, so I would expect them to fight. As for the bastion of Liberal haven any Conservative living there has to be a closet Conservative. Even Liberal Scott Brown lost to Leftist lying Elizabeth Warren.

        • Orangeone

See my post below with today’s article from MN medical device companies

      • Orangeone

Ours fought for ObamaCare and only protested with the tax.

    • Susanna958

This is what I came here to say.

    • notsofastthere

No question about your wish being granted, because everyone in Massachusetts voted for Obama.
OOPS – and everyone in Massachusetts knows it is all Bush’s fault.

    • Orangeone

Our large medical device are laying off more too, blue state so I agree sis, hope the demorats losing their high paying jobs enjoy their Election Consequences

  • “Unfortunately, and in order to absorb this cost burden into or business, this has meant less than 100 positions have been made redundant”

Made redundant? Yep, they’re definitely London-based. Whoever is the GOP nominee in 2016 needs to tabulate how many jobs were cost by Obamacare. That alone could win them the election.

    • Joe

      Facts – Facts – Facts

They are useless – Just make me feel good and I’ll vote for you!

    • Don

As long as the mainstream media proves they are anything but a Progressive propaganda machine reinforcing the liberal mantra with constant lies and deceptions, the truth is damned and their indocrination becomes reality. The ignorance of the American peoiple is being exploited to the level never seen in our history. Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Mussolini, Hussein and every other dictator in the history of the world owned their mainsteam medias just like Obama is owning ours. The results usually end up the same and freedoms are always lost. Watch it evolve before your own eyes.

    • sjmom

According to my son who works for one of these companies the GOP did NOTHING to help them when they were lobbying Congress. The companies tried to stop the tax up and until it went into effect.

    • Orangeone

It will be very helpful to assist MN with defeating Fraudster-Franken who voted FOR OCare.

  • wodiej

Indiana is one of the largest manufacturers of medical devices. We are already in dire straits. Look for this to hit our state soon.

    • Orangeone

      Orthopaedic capital of the world!

  • Joe

I hope that every single one of those who have lost their jobs voted for ZERO!

  • The annual cost of obamacare per family: $20,000, not savings of $2,500;
“slightly off”, like GDP “negative growth”.
Like a fisherman’s statement: “if I catch this one and 2 more, I will have THREE FISH!”

  • Nukeman60

Well, look at the bright side. Those 100 people layed off will be allowed to go get a job at Mickey D’s, and Obama will be able to say he ‘saved or created’ 100 more jobs. Happy days are here again!

“Do you want fries with that?”

  • Conniption Fitz
  • sjmom

So glad my son works for another medical device company.

    • sDee

My daughter worked for a bio-pharmaceutical R&D company. Obamacare undercut their IP protection. They shutdown/laidoff their research on new drugs in the pipeline last year – no IP protection – no profit. She saw what was coming to production too and found another job.

That one will not be in the news but is is a great loss.

      • sjmom

So far so good for my son thank God; he’s in sales. Will see him tomorrow night and see what he has to say because he just returned from a big corporate meeting.

God is good though because I remember before he found a job Smith Nephew was one of the companies he mentioned but it never went anywhere.

        • Orangeone

I’m glad your son is employed. I worry that no employer is safe, the premium hikes haven’t been fully realized and the no-cost to insured birth control and other mandates are not included in current packages. Just wait until the 20 year old men realize they are paying for women’s birth control pills in their premium!

          • notsofastthere

Many of us knew that. The Repubs knew that also, but they refused to make that point a message point. All I remember them saying is ‘one size fits all’ and that phrase meant nothing to the average citizen! The media knew it.

  • Ray

    When will he be impeached?

    • sjmom

When we the people light a fire under the GOP.

      • Ray

You can’t depend on the GOP. They are a weak, weak party that has a yellow streak wider than their backs. BGOP should be what they are known for, Big GOvernment Party.

        • sjmom

Then we have to find a way without them.

  • Sober_Thinking

We all knew this would happen.

Pray for those who have been and who will be hurt by this monster and his minions.

    Seriously breaks my heart…

  • Conniption Fitz

Obamacare will cost $20,000. for the average family?????

This is because the taxpayer is having to pay for the entire cost of medical care for everyone in our country divided by the number of people covered.

This means they average in the people engaging in the high risk lifestyles and behaviors that lead to 40-80 % increase in HIV, every kind of STD (some incurable), violence, suicide, mental illness, alcohol and drug addiction, early death.

Lifetime care for the average AIDS patient costs $600,000. and extra if addictions and mental health issues are involved. Half the people who are already HIV + do not know they are carriers…and likely to develop the disease. So they are spreading it around… liberally.

    • Orangeone

And that’s before 11-20 million illegals and their family members in Mexico are added to it! No worries, DHS has amended their immigration marketing materials to include OCare, you know that gov’t benefit they ARE NOT supposed to receive.

  • 57thunderbird

My brother in law in Texas works for a medical device company.I hope he is able to hang on to his job through this mess.

    • Orangeone

Look for medical device companies to leave MN for TX to avoid the state income taxes!

  • c4pfan

What is the GOP doing to stop it? Oh, that’s right on immigration reform while doing nothing about Obamacare!

    • Orangeone

They are paving the way to put all those illegal aliens on to OCare.

  • joyfulgiver

Sober – We’ve all been hurt by this monster in one way or another. It breaks my heart to see my husband work so hard for 30% less than what we were making 4 years ago.

Obamacare is a disaster and it’s about to destroy CA where we live. I just looked at the CA Exchange website, Yes, California is full steam ahead in their establishment of an Obamacare exchange and it’s not pretty! It shows that insurance rates for some areas of CA will increase by 25%. Yikes!

Here’s what things will look like in California – Check it out! I’m sure it’s just a matter of time before this same plan spreads its wings across the country.

http://www.cahba.com here is a sample of what you will see on their website. Check out their comments in Exchange News “If Romeny Wins”. #5 below cracks me up, the government telling we the people to “set your budget” what a joke! We’re doing that every day, deciding between what we NEED and what we WANT.

6 Things You Can Do Now to Get Ready for Enrollment in Covered California

By Phil Daigle on January 24, 2013

Enrollment in Covered California will not begin until October 1, 2013, but here are some things you can do to get ready.

1.Find out if your employer will offer health insurance in 2014? This is especially important if you work for a company with fewer than 50 employees.

2.Use this time to understand how health insurance works, including copays, deductibles, out-of-pocket maximums. You’ll need to understand these details to be an informed shopper.

3.Make a list of questions to have ready when it’s time to choose your health plan. For example,”Will this plan cover my prescription drugs? or “Can I stay with my current doctor?”.

4.Know your household income. (You’ll find it on your form 1040 listed as “Adjusted Gross Income”). Most people will qualify for a premium subsidy that will provide a substantial discount on health insurance costs. You’ll need your income information to find out for how much you’re eligible.

5.Set your budget. You’ll have to make some trade-offs between what you’d like and what you can spend. Breaking down the choices by cost will help narrow your choices.

6.Explore what’s available now. Perhaps you can get help with insurance now. Some changes are already in effect from the new health care law, for example dependent coverage to age 26, guaranteed issue for children, or the Preexisting Conditions Insurance Plan.

    • Orangeone

I’m so sorry you are experiencing these negative effects. MN is right behind you with the OCare exchange, our Legislature won’t yet disclose what the annual budget for it is yet.

No worries, O is coming to MN Monday to grab our guns before we find out.

  • bjohnson55

GE Healthcare will be taking a hit also and you can bet the CEO’s (Jeff Immelt) and the rest of the big wigs aren’t going to sacrifice their 10 million dollar plus bonuses to absorb this tax. The little guys will be paying for this tax, its called the chickens are coming home to roost only they are roosting over at the neighbor’s house.

  • proudhispanicconservative

I hope they are all liberals, but this is from Tenessee so unfortunately 90% were patriots, for the liberals that got the pink slip enjoy!!!

  • DCGere

  • unseen1

the company i work for just laid off 400 people due to obamacare. one of the guys laid off was telling me last week how they won the election. So sad to see his vote cost him his job the really sad part is I doubt he even understands the connection.

  • Orangeone

MN has St. Jude, Medtronic, Boston Scientific, numerous small medical device companies developing new technology.

    Just today: http://minnesota.publicradio.org/display/web/2013/02/01/politics/med-tech-device-tax-health-care-overhaul

Don’t you love the logic: The industry complains the tax, part of the federal health care overhaul, creates an unfair and unwise burden that will impede innovation and kill jobs. But supporters of the law contend the firms will benefit from an expansion of health care coverage — so they should share the cost.

Realization: Our medical insurance HMOs are nonprofits, most of our hospital are too. The 2.3% tax is on GROSS SALES so even if the company (like our small medical device ones) lose money, they have to pay the tax. Equity has been hard to raise because investors don’t want to invest knowing their investment is going to the ObamaCare med device tax not innovation and expansion!

  • As Bill Whittle said, I sure hope that the laid off employees were the ones with Obama-Biden bumper stickers in the parking lot. That, according to Whittle, will let them truly experience the consequences of their ballot last November.
