Both Retired Lt. Col. Ralph Peters and Retired Col. David Hunt agree that you can’t blame the military for the inaction that occurred on the night of the Benghazi attack back in 2012. They both argue that the only person that could have given the order to go into another sovereign territory would have been Obama. And then it would have come down the chain of command, from Panetta to Petraeus.
Peters further points out that in a case like what happened in Benghazi, the military would have wanted to go and in order to stop them there would have had to be a stand down order from the White House. Like the Brigadier General today pointed out, Peters says that the rule is that “even if you do not think there’s one chance in hell you can rescue those Americans, you try!” And he says every person who has ever worn the uniform understands that.
