Senator Orrin Hatch has said that he’s been told John McCain won’t return to the Senate this year, probably due to his brain cancer:

Hatch said he does not expect McCain, who is battling brain cancer, to return to the Senate.
“That’s what I’ve been told,” said Hatch, who is 84 and retiring after this year. “I don’t know. I hope he does, I hope he can.”
McCain has already missed votes this year, and with an already small Republican majority, it just makes things a bit tighter and tougher on big issues.
If McCain can’t return, he really should just go ahead and resign. Let a special election (or Nov. Election) fill his seat with someone who is able to use it.
