Sudanese Christian woman who refused to renounce her faith and sentenced to death is now safe at U.S. Embassy

What could have been the familiar story of Islamist extremism oppressing another Christian seems to have a happy ending, for now.

A Sudanese Christian woman who initially faced a death sentence after refusing to renounce her faith is now at the U.S. Embassy in Khartoum with her family, her husband told CNN on Friday.

Mariam Yehya Ibrahim and her husband, American Daniel Wani, were freed from custody Thursday after having been detained two days earlier upon arriving at the airport in the Sudanese capital. Their two children are with them.

Mariam had been accused of apostasy and adultery because her father was Muslim making her Muslim in the eyes of the local law, and her husband is Christian, which is illegal in Sudan. After being released and then recaptured at an airport, it seems that she has found safe haven in our embassy.

She has been given a U.S. Visa since her husband is American, and the State Department says they’re monitoring her condition with great interest. God is good.
