There are all sorts of big headlines out about how Senior Texas Senator John Cornyn refuses to endorse Ted Cruz and they’re making it sound like it’s a huge slight.
But that election is in 20-freaking-18. It’s two years from now. Why would they ask him for an endorsement right now anyway?!
Here’s the story from CNN:
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz shouldn’t expect much help from the senior GOP senator from his state, John Cornyn, ahead of a potential Senate primary challenge next cycle.
Cornyn, the Senate majority whip, told CNN Wednesday that he would not endorse either Cruz or his possible primary challenger, Rep. Michael McCaul, if the two squared off in 2018. It’s unusual for senators not to endorse colleagues from the same party — let alone from the same state.’
But what he actually said is that he won’t do it NOW because it’s two freakin years in the future:
“I’m not going to get involved in any primary races particularly with my colleagues in the Senate,” Cornyn told CNN when asked about Cruz and McCaul squaring off. “We’ll see what happens, but we’ve got plenty to worry about between now and November 2016 before we start worrying about November 2018.”
Reminded that senators typically back incumbents from their own party, Cornyn demurred.
“I see no benefit to anyone to get involved in the contested Republican primary so I would sit on the sidelines and watch with interest,” Cornyn said, adding that he is “not recruiting anybody” to get into the race.
This is a stupid story. If Cornyn had endorsed a challenger, THAT would be a snub. For him to say, “oh hey that’s like 2 years away” is NOT a story. In fact, given how much the rest of the GOP is bending over for Trump, this is more of a sign that he’s worried Trump will lose than anything else.
Remember, Trump already said he wants Cruz defeated. For Cornyn to not jump on board with the presidential nominee of his party shows how weak Trump actually is, not anything about Cruz.
Finally, why would ANYONE expect him to endorse Cruz? Cruz didn’t endorse Cornyn either. Dumb media.
