FORETELLING THE BIRTH OF JESUS

Isa 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Isa 9:6-7 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

Mal 4:2-6 But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall. And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the LORD of hosts.

THE BIRTH OF JESUS

Luke 2:1-20 In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be registered, each to his own town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

“Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”

When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Welcome to the Kindle Fire club RS. It’s awesome!

      • Rshill7

Do I need to get an app to take pictures with it? I’m thinking the camera should already be there but I don’t see it.

        • SineWaveII

          Which model do you have?

          • Rshill7

Kindle Fire HD w/32 gig memory…7 inch.

I also have the original one from Christmas 2010. The new one automatically imported my complete library. The new one appears to do everything an I-Pad can do except for the dual-facing camera the I-Pad has. They cost quite a bit less too, which is why I got it instead of the new I-Pad mini. My wife has the I-Pad II from last year and is really liking the I-Pod Touch she got this year.

We also have “Amazon Prime” so I can watch streaming HD movies on it (New Kindle). The graphics are awesome and there’s a huge app store with lots of free stuff, as you know. I just downloaded a guitar tuner app so I can tune my acoustic with it.

as a religious Jew i obviously disagree with many stances Christians take on different verses. theses verses can (and have) be debated for hours. however the first verse which you quote, Isa 7:14, i can not let pass without shedding light on its true meaning.there are many problems with the way Christians view this verse. lets go in order.
    1) “The L-rd himself shall give you a sign”. Jesus birth did not come until hundreds of years later. the sign given to the king in that story was as a proof from G-d that he would be victorious in that war. how can Jesus birth years later be a sign to that king at that time?
2)”Behold, a virgin shall conceive”. the Hebrew word in that verse is “Almana”, the translation of that word is “young women”, not virgin. there are numerous places where that word is used and CAN NOT MEAN VIRGIN. (the Hebrew word for virgin would be “Betsula”). now even if the word virgin would be in that verse, how can that be a sign? who would know she is a virgin? the entire point of a sign is that others should see it, but according to the Christian reading of this verse, nobody would ever really know.
3)”and shall call his name Immanuel”. Nowhere in any bible is Jesus referred to as Imanuel. now the meaning of that name is “G-d with us”, however never does the bible refer to a person or place with a name that isn’t they-res, no matter what the symbolism of the name is.

i encourage my Christian friends to study and learn with an open mind. in other words, let the verse tell you its meaning, don’t approach the verse assuming it refers to anyone.
i also encourage you to visit outreachjudaism.org and let your soul drink from the pure waters of the Holy Bible.

    Happy Holidays

    • Yanky Rodman

correction: the Hebrew word used is “Alma” not “Almana”.

    • Conniption Fitz

There is much evidence and many witnesses of Christ’s virgin birth and of the date as it is written the Bible:

      http://accurmudgeon.blogspot.com/2012/12/scientific-evidence-for-virgin-birth-of.html

      http://accurmudgeon.blogspot.com/2008/08/evidence-for-accuracy-of-bible.html

As Scripture tells us, with G-D, nothing is impossible…whales can swallow men, a barren elderly woman can conceive…a sacrificial ram can appear caught in brambles…bushes can burn without being consumed, the hand of G-D can write commandments in stone, G-D can write His Law in our hearts.

      • Yanky Rodman

but there cant be witnesses to Mary’s virgin conception? and regardless that’s not what the word means.
to the previous comment, its precisely because of my belief in Moses (as a prophet, not Heaven forbid, as a god) that i cant believe in Jesus.

        • Yanky Rodman

and i never said anything is impossible for G-d. i don’t deny for a second that G-d COULD make a virgin conceive. i deny that G-d DID make a virgin conceive.

          • Conniption Fitz

You have a right to your opinion, but it differs from many others.

            • Yanky Rodman

and they have a right to their opinion, but when they try to use (and sometimes distort) my Bible to prove their opinion…..

          • tinlizzieowner

You are more than welcome to believe as you chose, (since you’re not a Muslim). Now, go celebrate Hanukkah, and leave CHRISTmas to the rest of us, got it?

        • Conniption Fitz

People who knew Mary wrote what she told them. Luke is the one who took care of her last. His Gospel has the most detail.

          • Yanky Rodman

so you this story comes down to the credibility of Mary. as soon as you rely on one persons credibility as the bases of your religion you are no different than any other religion, besides Judaism (mass revelation). in other words, if you are willing to rely on a story from one person, why not believe Mohamed, or any other religion that was ever started?

    • Conservative_Hippie

      Hi Yanky!

I’m so excited to share my heart with you! You mentioned at the bottom of your post that we should…

“study and learn with an open mind. in other words, let the verse tell you its meaning,”.

I whole-heartedly agree. So let’s delve into the study of Isaiah 7:14 with an open mind! :)

I will respond to your comments directly and then I would like to add some thoughts of my own.

      ————————————-
      You said:

“1) “The L-rd himself shall give you a sign”. Jesus birth did not come until hundreds of years later. the sign given to the king in that story was as a proof from G-d that he would be victorious in that war. how can Jesus birth years later be a sign to that king at that time?”

I disagree with your underlying assumption that the sign was given to one person singularly (i.e. King Ahaz). Let me explain,

verse 11, ““Ask a sign of the LORD your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven.””

Verse 12, “But Ahaz said, I will not ask, neither will I tempt the LORD”

Who is Isaiah talking to in verse 11? Ahaz right? Okay now look at verse 13,

verse 13, “And he said, “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men, that you weary my God also?”

Who is Isaiah talking to in verse 13? The House of David, right? Look further in the verse see the two “you’s”. Who are the “you”‘s. It would follow that they would be refering pluraly to the House of David, no?

Okay now look at verse 14,

verse 14, “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”

Verse 14 starts out with the word “Therefore” so Isaiah must be continuing his tought from verse 13, so who is the “you” in “will give you a sign”? It must be, plurally, the House of David, right? Okay so the sign must be given to the House of David.

      ————————————–
      You said:

Yanky, I’m going to agree with you that Almah means “young woman”. There are 7 occurences in the Old Testament where Alamh is used. What if I could show you one place where Almah would be translated young unmarried woman (virgin), would that be enough to convince you that maybe it would be possible that Isaiah could have been alluding to a young unmarried woman (virgin) in isaiah 7:14 also? You say it doesn’t mean “virgin”, but is that conclusive? Couldn’t “young woman” also be refering to an unmarried woman and hence virgin? I think you can not absolutely rule out that fact.

      Here’s the verse, Genesis 24:43

Genesis 24:43, “behold, I am standing by the spring of water. Let the virgin who comes out to draw water, to whom I shall say, “Please give me a little water from your jar to drink,” ”

Here Almah is correctly interperatated as young unmarried woman or virgin, which Rebekah was and is critical to the story of Isaac meeting Rebekah.

But let’s say I conceeded that young woman didn’t specifically mean virgin. Does this interfere with the jist of the “sign”? What would the sign then be? A young woman will give birth to a son and will call his name Immanuel. This was true of Jesus’ birth, as written and proclaimed by his Jewish followers and so there we have at least one Messianic prophecy fulfilled by Jesus.

      ————————————–
      You said:

Yanky let me ask you how many names there are in Judaism for G-d? There are obviously many names for G-d; Adonai, Elohim, El Roi, YHWH, to name a few. What do you call G-d, when you pray to Him? I want you to know yanky that I worship G-d also. And when I see all the names for G-d, i know they refer to something special about Him. In the a similar way, jesus is called Immanuel because it is something special about Jesus. Immanuel means God with us and that is exactly who Jesus embodied, God in flesh.

i encourage my Christian friends to study and learn with an open mind. in other words, let the verse tell you its meaning, don’t approach the verse assuming it refers to anyone.
i also encourage you to visit outreachjudaism.org and let your soul drink from the pure waters of the Holy Bible.

And to you Yanky, my friend, I also encourage you to visti the New Testament. Don’t be afraid. Read it as you would any book. http://tinyurl.com/boyjh9z

        dear friend

sorry i have had a busy week and haven’t had a chance to respond until now.
        again lets go in order.
no matter how you look at that verse, it has to fit in the context of the story. and the birth of Jesus still cant be a sign at that time, so what was the sign then? with regard to the word “you”, throughout scripture the kings (besides the first king) where from the house of David (as will the messiah be). so “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men, that you weary my God also?” O house of David is referring to the king.

next you wrote “Yanky, I’m going to agree with you that Almah means “young woman”. There are 7 occurrences in the Old Testament where Alamh is used. What if I could show you one place where Almah would be translated young unmarried woman (virgin), would that be enough to convince you that maybe it would be possible that Isaiah could have been alluding to a young unmarried woman (virgin) in Isaiah 7:14 also?”
the answer is no that wont convince me, just because she was a virgin doesn’t mean that’s the translation of the word, and just because you mistranslated the word twice, doesn’t change its real meaning.
now if i give you a example where it CANT mean virgin, would you concede that in Isaiah you are mistranslating it?
        listen to this recording
        http://www.simpletoremember.com/media/a/how-do-missionaries-paint-jesus/

this verse is discussed at the 40 minute mark (although the whole thing is worth a good listen)

next, is there 1 place where Jesus is referred to as Immanuel? the answer is no. so regardless of what it means, and regardless of how you feel about Jesus, that verse isn’t referring to him because he was never called Immanuel.

and to your final point i ask, have you studied the Koran? or any other Bibles? you and i agree that G-d reviled Himself at Mount Sinai to the Jewish Nation and gave us the Torah (what you call the Old Testament). so that is where we both must start. i have found G-d there and i need not look any further. had the verse led me to the New Testament, i would have gladly followed, but the Torah did not lead me there.

        G-d Bless

        • Conservative_Hippie

          Hi Yanky,

I’m glad you responded to my last post!

          You said,

…now if i give you a example where it CANT mean virgin, would you concede that in Isaiah you are mistranslating it?
          listen to this recording
          http://www.simpletoremember.co

this verse is discussed at the 40 minute mark (although the whole thing is worth a good listen)

-I was interested in the verse that you mentioned that was an example where almah can’t mean virgin, so I started the audio program at minute 38 and listened for 10 minutes. The only two verses mentioned during that 10 minutes were Isaiah 7:14 (the verse in question) and Matthew 1:20-23.

I assume neither of those two were the verse you were referring to? Could you be more specific about the verse you were alluding to where almah cannot mean virgin? I’d be happy to listen to the whole 78 minute program if you have other questions you would like to ask me?

But since the Rabbi Singer brings up Matthew 1:20-23, I thought I would address that passage. But before I do i want to explain to you Yanky that most evangelical believers in Jesus as the Messiah/Moshiach regard the New Testament(NT) as just as God-inspired as the Old Testament(OT). That means that whatever is said in the NT must be in harmony with the OT; there can be no contradictions. So if there seems to be a contradiction, it is a misinterpretation made somewhere by the human being interpreting the verse. In other words, the OT and NT are one in truth and inerrent in their original writings, becuase human writers through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit wrote the words of God in both the OT and NT. Yanky, if you do not believe this I’d be happy to answer any questions you have, Lord-willing.

Okay back to Rabbi Singer’s reference to Matthew 1:20-23.

          Matthew 1:20-23,
“But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).”

Considering the verses quoted above I would like to address some of your concerns…

          1. Almah meaning virgin. You said,

now if i give you a example where it CANT mean virgin, would you concede that in Isaiah you are mistranslating it?

-I would agree that I am mistranslating it if I were indeed mistranslating it, but I’m not. Matthew (a Jewish publican), under the divine inspiration of the Holy Spirit wrote that the birth of Jesus was a fulfillment of the Isaiah 7:14 and specifically used the Greek word “parthenos”, which can only be translated as “virgin”. So I don’t even need to do any interpretation at all, because the writers of the Septuagint did the work for me – that was easy.

          ————————————————

          2. Jesus being called Immanuel. You said,

next, is there 1 place where Jesus is referred to as Immanuel?

-Yes in Matthew 1:23, where an angel of the Lord referred to one of Jesus’s titles as Immanuel or “God with us”, which is what Jesus was and what the Messiah/Moshiach was prophesied to be.

I would also like to take this moment to differentiate the “Name’ and “Titles” of Jesus. One is His name, Jesus, the other his one of his titles, “Immanuel”. “Jesus” or “Yeshua” is his human name “Immanuel” is one of his Messianic titles. Here are four more messianic titles that are found in Isaiah 9:6, “Wonderful Counselor”, “Mighty God”, “Everlasting Father”, and “Prince of Peace”. Yes, I believe in messianic deity and I believe Jesus is God in flesh, based on OT and NT scripture.

** a quick note: Yanky don’t get too hung up on Isaiah 7:14’s use of the word “almah” or the word “Immanuel”. It is only one among many messianic verses and doesn’t negate the messianic message, you’ll see that below.
          ————————————————

          3. Studying of other “Bibles”. You said,

“have you studied the Koran? or any other Bibles?”

I’m not sure I understand where your question is going? I have looked at parts of the Koran. I don’t approach it the way I would the Torah or the New Testament. As far as the Torah (Old Testament) and the New Testament; this is what i believe is God’s message to humanity and is Truth. Anything outside of these writings is extra biblical and should be looked at in that light. I’ve been a student of the Holy Scriptures as long as I can remember. I’ve taken bible classes at church, went through 2 years of pastoral intern programs, a semester of seminary, spent many summers at Bible camp, went to Bible College where I majored in Religion, and do personal daily Bible studies. Does that mean that I should immediately dismiss anything that is extra-biblical? My pastor and my spiritual mentor told me one time, that I should take the good and bad together, recognize the good and dismiss the bad. The Holy Scriptures/Theology are unlike any other writing or field of study, the more you study it the more you realize how much you don’t know about God.

          ————————————————

          4. Does the Torah lead you to the New Testament? You said,

” you and i agree that G-d reviled Himself at Mount Sinai to the Jewish Nation and gave us the Torah (what you call the Old Testament). so that is where we both must start. i have found G-d there and i need not look any further. had the verse led me to the New Testament, i would have gladly followed, but the Torah did not lead me there.”

-Briefly, Yanky you claim that, “had the verse led me to the New Testament, i would have gladly followed..” I believe you Yanky. Again, don’t be afraid of the New Testament. It is a collection of books, letters, diary’s, journals written by Jewish people for Jewish people (primarily) about the Jewish Messiah/Moshiach.

-Yes I agree with you that God revealed himself on Mount Sinai and you found God there. I found God there also, but there is another place I found God; Mount Moriah.

Here are some important events that happened at Mount Moriah

–God provides a sacrificial lamb for Abraham and Issac – Genesis 22:2,14 “2:Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you., 14: So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided”

–God provides a kinsman redeemer (Boaz) for Ruth – Ruth 3:6,9 “6: So she went down to the threshing floor and did everything her mother-in-law told her to do. 9: “Who are you?” he asked. “I am your servant Ruth,” she said. “Spread the corner of your garment over me, since you are a guardian-redeemer[b] of our family.””

–God provides the Temple for David and Solomon – 1 Chronicles 21:22; 22:1 “22: David said to him, “Let me have the site of your threshing floor so I can build an altar to the Lord, that the plague on the people may be stopped. Sell it to me at the full price. 1: Then David said, “The house of the Lord God is to be here, and also the altar of burnt offering for Israel.”” — 2 Chronicles 3:1 “Then Solomon began to build the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where the Lord had appeared to his father David. It was on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite, the place provided by David.”

***and finally on the summit of Mount Moriah there is a hill called Golgotha (Luke 23:33, Matthew 27:33, Mark 15:22, Luke 23:33, John 19:17) where God provided…

–The Sacrificial Lamb – John 1:29, “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” — Luke 23:33, “And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left.”

–The Kinsman Redeemer – Titus 2:14, “who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.”

Hebrews 9:11-12, “But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption”

–The Temple of the Holy Spirit – Matthew 27:50-51, “And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split” — 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”

Yanky, please read Isaiah 53 and tell me that is not talking about Jesus! I know that modern Jewish people don’t believe in the suffering Messiah/Moshiach. Believers in Jesus believe in a both a spiritual and physical Messiah/Moshiach. Spiritual in that he paid the penalty for our sins for eternity that no animal sacrifice could achieve and physical in that Jesus will someday come again and establish the New Jerusalem on the New Earth and will reign as King for eternity. But Yanky you must believe in Jesus as the Messiah/Moshiach! You must have many questions so i refer you to, http://www.jewsforjesus.org/answers/jesus .

I will pray for you Yanky!

          God Bless you my friend!

Jesus is NOT Issa (or Esau). The Koran is wrong. “Christians have an almost parasitic relationship to their Muslim betters. They use Issa, whereas Copts and Assyrians and Maronites use Yeshua or Yesua, depending on the dialect. Using Issa at first might seem like a good idea, but it keeps the Muslim in his Muslim frame of thinking with the Koran as his authoritative reference point.”

Lets call Him who He is. Lord Of Lords, King of Kings. Malik al-Malek.

Thanks. Just for GP’s that Arabic phrase comes from Bukhari 73:224 “The most aweful name in Allah’s sight on the Day of Resurrection will be a man calling himself Malik al-Amlak (King of Kings). Now why would Allah hate that name? I thought that we worshipped the same God? I don’t think so.

“Gunmen kill six at Nigerian Christmas service” December 26, 2012

Gunmen attacked a church in northern Nigeria during a midnight mass on Christmas Eve, killing six people including the pastor, before setting the building ablaze, residents and police said Tuesday.
“A group of gunmen came into the village at midnight and went straight to the church… they opened fire on them, killing the pastor and five worshippers. They then set fire to the church,” said Usman Mansir, resident of Peri village, near Potiskum, the economic capital of Yobe state. (via Atlas Shrugs)

No doubt the despicable, inhumane, bloodthristy Islamist Boko Haram did this.

What are ya’ll having for Christmas dinner Pally?

My wife is making her famous meat loaf this time. What she does is flatten it out like it’s a thick sheet of cookie dough (after mixing in all the appropriate flavor and texture stuff) then puts a cheesy mashed potato mixture on it and rolls it back up before cooking. When it’s done it’s like a cheesy potato stuffed meat log. It’s a really good meat and tater main course.

Merry Christmas Mike and Happy New Year to you and all our loyal friends here!

With all the hub bub this is the 1st time since Thursday I’ve been able to check in. It felt like I was missing something for days. There’s no place like home.

I understand that. Most weekends, I’m busy on the farm and don’t go online beyond email with a few friends and by Monday I feel like I’m missing something. Once I sign on here on Monday, I remember what it is that I’m missing. It’s my family, here at Scoop.

So I am reading all the wonderful heartfelt responses to my post and other posts here when my husband walks by and says..”Are you blubbering over the computer again..let me guess you are reading something on RightScoop?” So I showed Mister Smartypants what I was reading..he nodded and said “I’ll get you a kleenex” All of you rock and I am blessed to have you in my life.

Sweet! :0) God had a plan when He made Scoop! I thank Him that He did. This is a precious family here.
