The big day is here. Whoever votes to for cloture tonight, to end debate, is voting FOR the immigration reform bill. I don’t care how they vote on the final bill. THIS is the vote that counts and this is the vote we will remind them of as we primary them:
THE HILL – Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) said his colleagues should not vote Monday to end debate on a major border security amendment to the immigration reform bill because “no one has read” it.
“A yes vote on cloture tonight means that Sen. Reid will have gained full control of the process,” Sessions said, referring to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.). “Senators have to play Mother May I.”
Sessions argued that Reid would be able to block any amendment votes he doesn’t want to take once cloture is invoked. Sessions complained that since the “border surge” amendment was filed Friday afternoon, senators haven’t had enough time to review the changes made in the more than 1,000 page bill.
“This is exactly what happened with ObamaCare,” Sessions said. “The majority rushed through a complex bill so there would be no time to understand what’s in it.”
Later Monday, the Senate will vote on whether to end debate on a substitute amendment from Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.). His amendment included the “border surge” language from GOP Sens. Bob Corker (Tenn.) and John Hoeven (N.D.), which requires 700 miles of Southern border fencing and hiring 20,000 more border patrol agent among other things before immigrants can apply for green cards.
As a reminder, here is the results from our poll the other day on how you thought Rubio would vote tonight:
For the record, I voted ‘no’. Call me an eternal optimist if you must.
