Outspoken Trump critic Ben Sasse voted for Ted Cruz in early voting and then encouraged the rest of Nebraskans to get with the TedNado:
Happy to report that Melissa and I just early-voted for @tedcruz to #StopTrump. Time for conservatives to unite here in winner-take-all Nebr
— Ben Sasse (@BenSasse) April 15, 2016
It took him long enough!! He’s been ripping into Trump for months now, but didn’t give out an endorsement when Cruz could have really used it.
But even before the vote, Cruz has already snapped up the delegates from Trump, who didn’t even bother to show up!!
Here’s more on how the state handles its primary election:
Nebraska’s delegates are bound to the candidate who wins the state’s primary for two votes at the national convention. Nebraska is a winner-take-all state.
Nebraska is currently picking those delegates.
The process starts with county conventions, which are occurring across the state throughout this week. The county conventions will send 400 delegates to the state convention. Then, at the state convention, 33 of the state’s 36 national delegates will be chosen. The remaining three delegates are top officials with the Nebraska Republican Party, who are automatically delegates.
The Nebraska delegates are being chosen even before the state holds its primary. That means many of the people who are chosen will be party activists, including former and current officeholders. Most notably, U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer and Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts are both vying to become state delegates, which will give them the opportunity to run as national delegates if they win at the county level.
Let’s hope this is another straw that helps break the camel’s back on the way to Ted getting the nomination!!
