The stunning portion of this isn’t that Touré believes Ryan’s remark that ‘our rights come from God and nature’ is offensive, but why he believes it’s offensive:

[Paul Ryan] loves this line of ‘our rights come from God and nature’, which is so offensive to so much of America. Because for black people, hispanic people and women, our rights do not come from God or nature. They were not recognized by the natural order of America. They come from the government and from legislation that happens in relatively recent history in America. So that line just bothers me to my core.

      Actually I’ve always found that phrase to be a slippery one. Other than that it underlines “God” in our founder’s vision, wasn’t sure what it’s all about in practical terms.

      I will be unpopular with this, but Toure’s misguided outlook I think needs addressing every time that phrase is used. Otherwise to a lot of people (me included, a diehard conservative) it’s a really great slogan …. but what the heck does it mean in pragmatic terms? That’s a rhetorical question … I’ve figured it out finally but I shouldn’t have had to work so hard at it.

      To Ryan and Romney and all the rest … explain! Every time! Just takes a couple seconds! Toure is NOT alone in his confusion!

        Trying to think creatively about our founding documents is an exercise in futility. The exercise for anyone who wants to govern America should be, How do I make my ideas work within the framework of the Constitution and Declaration? That is the tough assignment and very few want to work at it.

        If they come from government vs nature / god then they can be taken away any time the government likes. That’s it. It’s that simple.

        If a government dictates rights then all it takes is for a nice little man named Adolf Hitler or Pol Pot or Barack Obama to come along and say – this is not a person, that is not a person, this person has no rights and can be killed. Maybe I’m reaching putting Obama into the Hitler/pot camp but have you seen his statements about babies that survive abortion? No medicine for them, no love, no right to be protected, in fact kill ’em. Its called infanticide. But that’s what happens when government dictates rights.

        It means that you are born with your rights, they aren’t “given” to you by government or anyone else. Therefore using government to take away someone’s rights is a crime against nature and God and is therefore the highest level of crime. And no legislation can ever change that. Hence no one can ever take your rights away legally. To defend that concept we have the constitution which protects all of our rights. The constitution is supreme over the government not part of it. At least that’s how it’s supposed to work.

        It means you are born with certain rights by virtue of being a human being.

        Before this declaration, the Crown granted you your rights, if you had any at all. The Founders said that no human could do that, but that every human being (both inside and outside America) had fundamental rights. They appealed to a higher authority than the King to say the King was in the wrong.

        Even if you don’t believe in the Creator, the concept still stands.

      • It needs no explanation for those who understand the founding of America. But since so many are being educated in public schools, you make a valid point that Ryan and Romney need to explain this every time they say it.

        Something like:

        “Our rights come from God and nature, not from government. It was God who inspired us to form a union so we can be strong against tyranny across the seas. That union came at a price. Some colonies in the south refused to end slavery, so we had to place in our Constitution our greatest desire to see ALL as equal under the law, so that future generations may obey God’s will and end slavery for good. Through the grace of God, the Republican Party was formed to do just that, as their founding platform defined the end of slavery. Through the grace of God, the United States shed the blood of hundreds of thousands of its patriots so that slavery would end, the union would be strong, and ALL would be equal. The Reconstruction Act affirmed the rights of citizenship to former slaves. They were not granted the right to vote from government. Their right to vote was granted by God and the united states finally recognized that. We saw former slaves serve as great Republican congressmen in the late 1800s until Man intervened through the Democrat Party to shut down their right to vote through poll taxes and literacy tests.         I rattled that off the top of my head so my facts could use some checking. Also, I tend to ramble, so Romney/Ryan would have to shorten that up a bit 🙂 But I think it could serve as a starting point.

When a large percentage of public school systems in our major cities are being turned over to labor unions, it is easy to see American history and exceptionalism being suppressed. After being asked why the NEA does not represent the best interests of the American students, their president said,”When students start paying union dues, we will represent them accordingly.” As the influence of the labor movement is incorporated into our public schools, the more dim the American Dream becomes.

        As for the plight of african americans, ..The notion of rights coming from God and Nature is what delivered the change from system of the government given rights of former empires . Its why slavery ended, its why the civil right movement was sucessful and why Rev Dr Martin Luther King Jr was apart of it all

        I agree with Betsey. It is not the President and Vice President’s job to educate us. This was never the relationship between government/individual that the founding fathers had in mind. Education starts with educating yourself laying paying someone to educate you. Did he skip American History, Civics and Government classes? I thought journalists take a few government/political science classes. This phrase is in the Declaration of Independence and reinforced in early, historical documents. It’s a sad day when we expect a Vice President has to “explain” the basic tenets of the term “inalienable rights”.

    He doesn’t get it. Those rights come from G-d, which is another way of reminding us that politicians can’t take those rights away from us because they aren’t theirs to take away. Of course government can forcefully take those rights away, but when people realize that our Constitution is set up to make people realize that government was not given the power to deny us those rights they will fight to prevent it. It was the belief that those rights come from G-d that has gotten our naton to overcome the indignities and attrocities that were forced on people. Government was not given the right to do those things, and we eventually succeeded in forcing government to grant those rights they were not given permission to take.

    Maybe someone can explain it better or add on.

    What he does NOT understand is that it was the GOVERNMENT that TOOK his rights away… that men, through GOVERNMENT ALLOWED slavery to happen. In that, MEN and GOVERNMENT FAILED.

    The freedom comes 1st and is inherent, the creation to gov’t to protect that freedom comes second. It may be a nuance, but it is a very important mindset to cherish if one wishes to protect oneself from overreaching government.
    It goes along with the saying about those who would give up some amount of freedom for security, deserve neither….

    I would love to see Newt sitting in the chair next to this misguided soul on one of the Sunday talk shows!

They forget (or never even learned) that many of the U.S. Congressmen from Texas were black Republicans.       • Thanks for your help on this. I too pulled up the DofI and read it, trying to get to the bottom of it. The first paragraph does not speak of any rights given to man but because of nature and nature’s God, that we are in need of giving a defense as to why we are going to be in rebellion.

        When I do hear about where our rights come from, I automatically go to the second paragraph, that has already been quoted on this thread that ties the unalienable rights not to nature but to the Creator.

        I do agree though that Ryan may be thinking of the connection not of nature to man but because man is created by God, naturally he has rights. It would seem different than to state that nature gives rights to an individual where nature is an object.

        Again, I deeply appreciate your work on this. It surely is not easy and needs to be clarified better.

      • Thanks for the work on this. I am sick of those who want to argue for the idea that our rights miraculously came upon us by some magic. Yet, if you deny the creator, then you must come up with something to address this issue. One does wonder how an atheist can articulate such an argument without calling the Founding Fathers, “stupid, close minded….”

        Though Franklin has many interesting sayings, I personally would never quote him for this endeavor. The DofI would seem to be the best.

        As mention above, I do not see the “rights” being talked of directly in the first paragraph of the DofI. However, this may have been what Jefferson was thinking when he moved to the second paragraph tying the knot between Creator and unalienable rights.

          It may be John Locke was the influence on both Jefferson and Franklin in what they said. Prior to what MtCougar brought up and 911Infidel, my guess had been that Benjamin Franklin was who Ryan was basing his statement on because I had seen him say God and nature in the above quote.

The fact is, the government didn’t grant the right to live without being enslaved or even take away rights, it failed to defend the natural rights of black men from being impinged upon by slave owners.

    A right, by definition, is something that law cannot take away (and therefore cannot grant). [I’m talking about basic human rights like freedom, not like contractual rights] If law could grant rights, then people couldn’t say “give me my rights!” because the fact that the law didn’t allow something would mean that thing was not a right. The very fact that people can say, “I am supposed to have this right, and it is being denied,” ought to tell us that the right comes from something outside government.

    Government can deny rights, or government can make it a crime to deny rights, but I don’t see how government can create rights.

    I’m sure I didn’t say that as eloquently as it should be said, but there it is.

Really, it’s just total ignorance about what rights are, where they come from, and what they imply. What he thinks are rights, are actually just privileges – The latter is given and may be revoked, whereas the former belongs to the individual by default, and can only be violated by the initiation of force.

    I think one problem is that people don’t see any alternative between rights coming from “God” or rights coming from “Government”. There is no third way, or so is widely believed. Ayn Rand showed that third way. The proof is right there in Galt’s speech.

      Do some research. The liberal mantra that the Civil War was about slavery is a myth. It was about states rights. The emancipation was not proclaimed until more than a year after the War started. The South was discussing the slave question before the war started.

      Don’t misunderstand me, I’m 100% anti slavery. When the war started Slavery was constitutional, therefore. the war couldn’t have been about slavery.
