Walmart REFUSES to make BLUE LIVES MATTER cake for retiring police officer, says it RACIST

At the end of last week a Walmart in Georgia refused to make a cake for a retiring police officer. The cake was requested to have a thin blue line on it, but three different Walmart employees refused to make the cake calling it racist.

Here’s the original complaint on Facebook by Taylor Wilkes:

#BOYCOTTWALMART: So my buddy’s sister went to Walmart in McDonough, GA to have a cake made for their father’s retirement party. He’s retiring from being a police officer. She asked Walmart to make a “thin blue line” cake to commemorate his extensive and honorable service as a dedicated police officer. Walmart refused to honor her request due to it being “racist.” Three separate people in management denied her request for this reason. To me, this is appalling. There is nothing racist about the symbolism behind the “thin blue line,” yet people CHOOSE to make EVERYTHING about race. I’m so tired of it. It’s literally exhausting for me to think about now. It’s only ignorant people who continue to spread this negativity. People need to educate themselves. Bottom line. I’m just waiting for the day that our American flag is deemed “racist” by ignorant instigators who are just looking for attention and for something to be upset about. It’s really getting ridiculous.

I will be changing the privacy settings on this post to “public” so feel free to share this as you see fit.

The story has ballooned over the weekend into Walmart finally apologizing:

WTVM – A Walmart spokesperson has acknowledge and apologized for a mishap with several employees at a store in McDonough, where a request for a cake to honor a police officer’s retirement was not honored.

The cake, according to a Facebook post from Taylor Wilkes, a friend of the officer’s family, was to have a blue line/blue lives matter theme to honor the officer. The employees who were to make that cake apparently thought it was a racist message, and refused to make it.

Franklin Allen, Chief of the Jonesboro Police Department, says the kind of mentality displayed by the workers at Walmart is symbolic of the ill will that’s mounting against police departments everywhere.

“It’s really heartbreaking, because officers go out and put their lives on the line for people, regardless of color, creed, sex, or national origin. It doesn’t matter to us,” said Allen.

After the story got out on social media, Walmart apologized, issuing a statement: “Our goal is to always take care of customers. But, sometimes we misstep. We’ve reached out to the family to make this right and offer our apologies.”

CBS46 reached out to Taylor Wilkes for comment but have not heard back. Wilkes did post an update on Facebook regarding the situation:

“The manager at Walmart met with my friend’s sister and offered to make the cake (which had already been taken care of by Kroger) and apologized for the mistake. He stated that Walmart fully supports law enforcement and donated some extra stuff for the retirement party along with a gift card in lieu of the cake.

If you ask me, I think he just did that because, thanks to you all, this got so much attention, and he didn’t want it to go farther than it did. The way the meeting was described to me was that it was very scripted and not very sincere.

So, although the mistake was “made right,” I will still not be shopping at Walmart due to the “quality” of employees they hire. But that’s just me. Please share this post just like you shared the other one so that people may get the update and form their own opinion.”

There’s no word on whether Walmart has fired these employees or not.
