Within the last hour, Trump jumped on Twitter to defend his policy of arresting and prosecuting people who enter the country illegally:

Democrats are the problem. They don’t care about crime and want illegal immigrants, no matter how bad they may be, to pour into and infest our Country, like MS-13. They can’t win on their terrible policies, so they view them as potential voters!

We must always arrest people coming into our Country illegally. Of the 12,000 children, 10,000 are being sent by their parents on a very dangerous trip, and only 2000 are with their parents, many of whom have tried to enter our Country illegally on numerous occasions.

Knowing what we know about Obama’s ‘catch and release’ policies, I find it difficult to disagree with anything Trump said here, as bad as it may sound for Democrats. Obama absolutely let criminal illegals into the country, some of which turned around and committed even more crimes, including murder.
I know it sucks for children to be taken away from their parents, but absent a better solution it seems to me the best thing to do in order to protect children from predators posing as family members in the asylum process. That is what this is all about, after all.
And if people still insist on crossing into the country illegally, they should be prosecuted. If that means law enforcement separating them from their children, well those are the breaks for breaking the law. In fact the law states that HHS must take custody of the children in those instances. If Congress wants to fix that, they can. They should stop whining and do something about it.
But in reality, I don’t think they really care all that much. They just want to bludgeon Trump and Republicans with this issue for as long as they can until November to help them win more seats. Say what you will about Trump using this as leverage to fix immigration laws and build a border wall, but the truth is that Democrats are trying to use it as leverage to win in November. Their hands are certainly not clean in all of this.
