Trump just threw down the gauntlet at Democrats, arguing that if they refuse to fix these immigration loopholes that allow ‘killers’ into the country, then he welcomes a shutdown.
Watch:
“I’d love to see a shutdown if we don’t get this stuff taken care of,” Trump says regarding immigration policies. “The world is laughing at us because they can’t believe these policies.” pic.twitter.com/sjqGt101Ab

Maybe this should be called the government ‘showdown’ instead of ‘shutdown’.
I really like the president’s statement for a couple of reasons. First, Trump is finally treating a shutdown like it should be treated. It’s not something to fear. It’s not armageddon. Perhaps it is unfortunate, but it won’t result in people not getting their #SS checks and what not. Essential services won’t be part of it. He’s owning it…like a boss.
Secondly, Trump is communicating to the American people that our national security is so important that a government shutdown would be preferable to allowing these terrible immigration policies continue. And he’s exactly right.
I hope Republicans follow Trump’s lead here and begin echoing this same sentiment.
