Oklahoma has now passed a law protecting Christian adoption agencies from being persecuted if they refuse to adopt to same-sex couples on religious grounds:
THE HILL – The Oklahoma House of Representatives has approved a measure that would allow adoption and foster care agencies to reject same-sex couples on religious grounds.
The measure, S.B. 1140, states that “no private child-placing agency shall be required to perform, assist, counsel, recommend, consent to, refer, or participate in any placement of a child for foster care or adoption when the proposed placement would violate the agency’s written religious or moral convictions or policies.”
That means that adoption and foster care agencies could turn down same-sex couples, single mothers and inter-faith couples if an agency claims that approving such applications would violate its religious or moral convictions.
The bill was approved by the Oklahoma state Senate last month and now heads to Gov. Mary Fallin’s (R) desk.
While I can’t speak to the technicalities of the bill, I can say that I support the principle upon which this bill was written. Christian adoption agencies and organizations should not be sued or punished simply because they refuse to violate their Christian beliefs in adopting children to homosexual couples. It’s really that simple, and that’s exactly what will eventually happen in this country in more and more states without laws like this in place.
Of course, radical homosexual groups will have a lawsuit filed in the courts before the ink is dry, should the governor sign this bill. That’s to be expected and I’m sure it will shock no one in Oklahoma.
At the core of the issue is ‘rights’. It has become a zero-sum fight for the Left, as they seek to take away religious freedom rights from organizations like bakeries and adoption agencies when they collide with the made-up right of equality that the government has given same-sex couples to marry. The two cannot coexist, therefore any store that doesn’t sell gay wedding cakes or any organization that won’t adopt children to gay couples must be obliterated.
So I applaud the Oklahoma legislature for attempting to protect Christians. It’s a fight that’s really only just beginning and can get very hostile. Ask Mike Pence.
