Last night cameras caught Trump telling Putin not to meddle in the upcoming elections during his Japan visit:

It’s very hard to hear but it comes near the end of the clip after a reporter asks him if he’ll tell Putin not to meddle in the election.
Trump says “of course” and then proceeds to tell Putin not to meddle — and with a wag of the finger and a smile on his face.
It’s clearly not a super serious statement by Trump where’s he’s putting Putin on the spot, but it’s something.
Hey, at least he’s not telling Putin he’ll have more flexibility after the election…
