Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO) elaborates on “sugar-coated Satan sandwich” analogy

By now most of you have probably heard Rep. Emanuel Cleaver’s bizarre description of yesterday’s debt deal as a “sugar-coated Satan sandwich.” Here he is on MSNBC last night explaining what he meant by that. You might still be scratching your head a little after watching this.

I’m no fan of the deal either, so if this means Cleaver is a “no” then great. I just find it amusing that he fears that the deal’s relatively small (and ultimately unlikely) spending cuts – spread out over 10 years – somehow mean that poor and old people will soon be fending for themselves. The country can never spend enough on welfare and entitlement programs to satisfy Congressmen like Cleaver – even if it means borrowing trillions of dollars we don’t have, and have little hope of ever repaying. Not like that would ever pose an existential threat to Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid, right?
