This is not the news that I wanted to hear before an impeachment trial begins in the Senate:
DC EXAMINER – A key Republican senator is working behind the scenes to build support for calling witnesses in President Trump’s upcoming impeachment trial.
Sen. Susan Collins, a centrist Republican up for reelection later this year, told the Washington Examiner she is working with “some of my Republican colleagues,” as well as party leaders, “to reach an agreement on how to proceed with the trial that will allow the opportunity for witnesses for both the House managers and the president’s counsel if they choose to do so.”
The Bangor Daily News was the first to report the story.
Collins didn’t say how many GOP lawmakers are included in those talks. Sen. Mitt Romney, a Utah Republican, has expressed interest in hearing from witnesses.
It’s likely there will be votes to summon witnesses once the Senate trial starts, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, said last week.
Collins has told reporters she agrees with waiting until later in the trial to consider witnesses.
Of course it would be Susan Collins. And I’m sure Mitt Romney is in those meetings with her, and probably Lisa Murkowski too. Ugh.
Haven’t we heard enough witnesses in the House trial? Democrats dug up everyone they could and there was still no evidence that Trump did anything wrong. The House impeached solely because they hate him and don’t want him to get elected.
I’ve said before and I still contend that if there is a trial in the Senate, it should be as short as possible. In fact I’d rather they vote to dismiss it without a trial, but I doubt that would happen.
