Echoing what Leader McConnell said last week, Trump tweeted today that states that have been poorly run should not be bailed out with the next stimulus. Rather, he said the “elimination of Sanctuary Cities” must be on the table:
“Well run States should not be bailing out poorly run States, using CoronaVirus as the excuse! The elimination of Sanctuary Cities, Payroll Taxes, and perhaps Capital Gains Taxes, must be put on the table. Also lawsuit indemnification & business deductions for restaurants & ent.”

While I really don’t like the idea of another stimulus, eliminating sanctuary cities would be a great accomplishment for Trump if we were to go that route.
I just hope Trump really means this and won’t back down, because one of two things would happen if he does. Obviously the elimination of sanctuary cities would occur for any city who really wanted the money. But I think the likelier outcome would be that Democrats in the House would never allow such a condition to be put on the aid, and that if Trump were to stick to his guns on this, as well as Republicans, the stimulus would never happen.
However if Trump isn’t as serious as he sounds about this, then should Republicans fold, the stimulus will likely get passed and sanctuary cities will get the money anyway. That’s probably the likeliest outcome considering recent experience.
