If you don’t want to watch the whole interview, here’s the two best segments:
"We have an idea that, to show that you're a good person who knows racism exists, you're supposed to treat black people like children. We've gone from helping black people in the real world to a religion… It's kabuki & it needs to stop"

McWhorter explains that all of this virtue signaling about race by antiracist black and white people has become a religion and it has gotten people fired for ‘offending’ black people when it was really of no consequence.
There was one part of the interview (the second video segment) I especially liked where McWhorter hits back at the narrative on the left that CRT isn’t being taught in schools. He said that while the legal theory isn’t being taught, ideas derived from it are being taught and he connects that to cancel culture:
There are many terrible things going on but I’m thinking about what hurts us. You might want to think about this as a larger strain of ideology in the country. I’m disgusted by what goes on on the right too and it worries me when the right distorts what CRT is and goes too far in barring it.
Although there are major problems with the way CRT is used in classrooms – not what Kimberlé Crenshaw wrote 100 years ago. I’m talking about the way CRT is used in today’s classrooms, ideas derived from it. So we don’t need to pretend the legal theory is being taught in classrooms. But when white and black kids who are 8 are being taught to think of themselves as opposing cadres of white and black, that is a problem and it’s a problem not only for the white kids, but for black kids who are taught that the main and most interesting thing about them is what white people think or don’t think about them.
I know that sounds perfectly normal in our times – I don’t get it. I think a lot of black people don’t get it. And whenever I see a white person or semi-white person fired because they supposedly hurt our feelings when actually it doesn’t, and you and I and most black people are just going on about our business, and the white people stand there with their cheeks sucked in thinking that they’ve done the right thing by showing that they know that racism exists by getting somebody fired for no reason, I’m embarrassed Eddie. I feel like we’re being treated as little kids, like little hothouse flowers, when they are people who need real help and all of this virtue signaling is not what Dr. King was thinking about.
McWhorter’s book is #10 right now at the New York Times and #4 on Amazon’s best selling list. Let’s hope people heed his words because it sounds like he really gets it.
