Liz Truss resigns as UK Prime Minister, becoming the shortest-serving leader in UK history

After what seems like just a few weeks ago that UK Prime Minister Liz Truss took over for Boris Johnson after he resigned, the new Prime Minister is resigning from her post.

The news broke this morning after having been in office for only 44 days.

Embattled British Prime Minister Liz Truss announced she would step down from office Thursday after serving just six weeks in the position.

Truss’ tumultuous stint was marked by a fiscal fiasco and hostile opposition from her own Conservative Party over her proposal to cut taxes on corporations and the wealthy, which sent financial markets into a weeks-long slide.

“I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected,” she said, a day after pledging to remain in office as “a fighter not a quitter.”

Her resolve collapsed after her senior minister stepped down and a House of Commons vote on a controversial fracking proposal, endorsed by Truss but opposed by members of her party, descended into disarray — leading lawmakers to call on her to step down.

Meanwhile, ministers also complained of Conservative whips using heavy-handed maneuvers to corral votes.

Chris Bryant of the Labour Party said he “saw members being physically manhandled … and being bullied” by the enforcers, charges Conservatives denied.

It sounds like a big political mess over there. I would think that cutting taxes on corporations and drilling for oil and gas would be a good thing, but apparently that’s too right-wing or something for these ‘conservatives’.

So they’ll hold another election and someone more ‘moderate’ will likely take the wheel.
