UPDATE: Kevin McCarthy fails to get majority vote on 3rd ballot; Opposition grows from 19 to 20 votes

The vote is still going on, but at this point we can say that Kevin McCarthy won’t get the needed majority votes to become Speaker on the first ballot.

There have been at least five votes among Republicans for Biggs at this point, a couple for Jim Jordan and at least one for someone else.

The count is still ongoing, but it’s clear among Republicans that McCarthy won’t get 218 votes. Which means McCarthy will have to do more negotiating and ‘horse trading’ to see if they can come up with a deal to convince enough hardliners to vote for him.

Here’s a few tweets from Chad Pergram and others on the ongoing votes:

Yep, right now it’s at least 12 Republicans voting against McCarthy and there will probably be more.

UPDATE: Here’s a few more tweets, including one suggesting McCarthy is done negotiating:

Here’s the livestream if you’re interested in watching it:

UPDATE: 2nd ballot voting has begun and you can watch it on the livestream above. There’s already four votes for Jim Jordan, so one more and McCarthy will fail again to win the speakership.

UPDATE 2: Obviously McCarthy failed on the second ballot with the same number of votes against him. The 3rd ballot is beginning and you can watch it above. Jim Jordan was once again nominated for Speaker, this time by Chip Roy.

UPDATE 3: McCarthy fails on 3rd ballot. And thanks to Byron Donalds, the opposition grew this time from 19 to 20 votes:

UPDATE 4: House votes to adjourn until tomorrow at noon.
