The health of Pope Francis has worsened today, with the Pontiff experiencing “two episodes of acute respiratory” episodes.

Vatican says that: “Earlier today, #PopeFrancis experienced two episodes of acute respiratory insufficiency, caused by a significant accumulation of endobronchial mucus & consequent bronchospasm. Two bronchoscopies were therefore performed, requiring the aspiration of abundant secretions. In the afternoon, non-invasive mechanical ventilation was resumed. The Holy Father has remained alert, aware of his surroundings, & cooperative at all times. The prognosis remains reserved.”

My understanding of the word ‘acute’ is that it essentially means ‘severe’. Pray for the Pope.
