Secretary of State Marco Rubio just hit the terrorist country of Iran with another punitive designation that will allow more sanctions to be applied to the country.
Rubio designated them as a State Sponsor of Wrongful Detention:
Today I designated Iran as a State Sponsor of Wrongful Detention. For decades the Iranian regime has cruelly detained innocent Americans and citizens of other nations to use as political leverage. Iran must end this abhorrent practice and immediately free all unjustly detained Americans.

According to Grok: “This new label, established under a 2020 U.S. law, enables sanctions and diplomatic tools against Iran, similar to prior designations for Russia and China, to combat hostage diplomacy affecting over 40 Americans currently held.”
If I were to guess, I’d say this new designation a result of the negotiations with Iran, and it’s likely due to Iran refusing to concede on the issue of American hostages in these negoatitions.
