In another sign that Democrats are uneasy about the current crop of 2020 candidates, a new Democratic contender has announced he’s running for president:
FOX NEWS – Former two-term Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick is jumping into the race for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Patrick declared his candidacy for the White House in a video on social media and in an email sent to supporters early Thursday.
“I admire and respect the candidates in the Democratic field that bring a richness of ideas and experience and a depth of character that makes me proud to be a Democrat,” Patrick said. “But if the character of the candidates is an issue in every election, this time is about the character of the country. So in the spirit of profound gratitude for all the country has given to me, with a determination to build a better, more sustainable, more inclusive American dream for the next generation, I am today announcing my candidacy for president of the United States.”
Deval Patrick is essentially a nobody who faces a huge uphill battle. There’s a debate coming up next Wednesday which he undoubtedly won’t be a part of. And the fact that he’s a nobody will mean that fundraising will be a challenge.
Bloomberg has a better chance at running, at least with regard to money and name recognition. And he’s also on the ballot in Alabama and Arkansas, which Patrick missed out on.
I suspect Bloomberg will soon announce he’s running. And in a month or two Patrick will announce he’s getting out of the race because he couldn’t raise enough money. I just don’t see any way for Patrick to gain traction at this point.
