AOC derided the notion today that someone should pull themselves up by their bootstraps, noting that it’s physically impossible:

If you take it literally then yes, it’s physically impossible. But it’s not supposed to be taken literally because it’s a metaphor!
A quick google and she would know that this phrase means “to succeed only by one’s own efforts or abilities”. That’s its modern day usage and it’s dumb to suggest it’s intended to be literal.
What AOC is really saying, though, is that she doesn’t think people can take care of themselves and therefore the government must step in and give them food, a house, a car, healthcare, and a nice commie foot rub at the end of the day. Because, you know, socialism has worked everywhere it’s been tried. Just look at Venezuela.
