Apple and Will Smith became the biggest Hollywood entities to take concrete action to leave Georgia as they and director Antoine Fuqua announced plans Monday to move production of their new drama about slavery, “Emancipation,” out of the state to protest its restrictive new election law.
The move marks Hollywood’s first major exit from the state where it shoots much of its work since the bill was signed into law last month. But it is more likely to stand as a one-off than the start of a trend, a function of Apple’s deep pockets and the movie’s particular subject matter.
“At this moment in time, the nation is coming to terms with its history and is attempting to eliminate vestiges of institutional racism to achieve true racial justice. We cannot in good conscience provide economic support to a government that enacts regressive voting laws that are designed to restrict voter access,” Fuqua and Smith said in a statement.
“Regrettably, we feel compelled to move our film production work from Georgia to another state.”
“Emancipation” will now be shot in Louisiana, where some of the action takes place. Apple did not immediately reply to a request for comment. Shooting is scheduled to begin in June.
What a load of garbage. I laid out the other day exactly what’s in the new Georgia election law, and there’s nothing regressive about it and it does not restrict voter access.
What these idiots don’t like about the new law is that forces people who use mail-in ballots to include their driver’s license or state-issued ID number in the ballot applications and also on the outside of the ballot envelope when returned. It also prohibits ballots being sent out unsolicited, meaning someone has to request it.
How does that restrict anything? What it does do is protect the integrity of that person’s vote and the overall vote.
So why are Apple and Will Smith against protecting the integrity of our voting system? Do they think that black people are incapable of getting and using IDs when voting? Cause you know, that sounds ignorant and kinda racist. And quite elitist.
This whole thing is absurd, but this is the woke world we live in now.
