In this really interesting interview with Iran Deal liar Ben Rhodes, he says that Obama believes that the election was lost because of Russian meddling, because Hillary was a crappy campaigner, because Trump’s message resonated, and… fears over globalism and immigration.

Basically Obama believes that Trump winning the election had to do with people’s fears over globalism and immigration – Rhodes paints the latter as “the freedom movement of peoples”, but that’s what he’s talking about.
On the part of globalism, this is really the central issue of Trump against conservatism – is he ideologically opposed to free trade in favor of protectionism, or does he really just want better globalist deals that will favor the U.S.? Where you lie on that spectrum determines how much of a Trumpist or a conservative you are.
On the immigration issue, it’s obvious that Rhodes is trying to spin the disastrous effects of massive Muslim immigration into Europe as a “freedom movement.” This is the issue where Republicans were completely undone by Trump because they were too weak to impose the rule of law. Rhodes is right that anxiety over immigration led to Trump, but he’s still blindly supporting open borders for economic refugees into the U.S., and Islamic refugees into Europe.
Don’t miss the part where he says Angela Merkel had a TEAR in her EYE when she last met with Obama, implying that she was distraught over Trump’s victory. It’s a gem.
