BREAKING: Biden to issue executive order on expanding Supreme Court

Biden is announcing today an executive order that will establish a ‘bipartisan commission’ to study the expansion of the seats on the Supreme Court:

President Biden will sign an executive order Friday that creates a bipartisan commission to study expanding the Supreme Court, as he promised throughout the 2020 election, the White House said.

The six-month commission will provide an analysis of the principal arguments surrounding the divisive subject. Progressives are pushing for more seats after former President Trump appointed three justices to the court.

This so-called ‘bipartisan’ commission will be nothing more than an excuse for Biden to claim that expanding the Supreme Court is legitimate and needs to be done.

The bigger problem for Biden is that two Senators currently oppose dumping the filibuster, Manchin and Sinema, and that would be absolutely necessary if they were to pass legislation expanding the court. But even worse for Democrats, these same two Senators also oppose expanding the court. So even if Democrats managed to get rid of the filibuster, Manchin and Sinema would oppose the court packing legislation – at least that’s what they’ve said publicly.

But where this hack commission’s potential findings will likely come into play is during the elections of 2022, when Democrats try to expand their seats in the Senate to offset the problem kids from W. Virginia and Arizona. Manchin and Sinema are both in until 2024, so Schumer will have to focus on defeating more Republicans if they are to gain enough seats remove the filibuster and expand the court.

Which is a big ask in my opinion, but one that Republicans should absolutely take seriously. And at this point, I think it’s more promising that Republicans could actually take back the Senate next year, considering the danger of removing the filibuster and expanding the high court. But it all remains to be seen.
