[UPDATE: Trump weighs in…] – BREAKING: Cory Booker is out, diversity hardest hit…

The news is just breaking that Senator Cory Booker has just ended his 2020 presidential campaign:

NBC NEWS – Sen. Cory Booker. D-N.J., announced Monday he is dropping out of the Democratic presidential race.

With his departure, former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick is now the only black candidate remaining in the 12-candidate Democratic primary.

Booker held a staff call at his campaign headquarters in Newark before making his announcement public, a campaign official told NBC News.

Booker polled at about 2 percent nationally, according to the RealClearPolitics polling average, and was knocked off the debate stage in recent months. Booker joins author Marianne Williamson and former Housing Secretary Julián Castro as candidates who have departed from the race this month.

Earlier this month, Booker said the president’s looming impeachment trial, in addition to other matters in Washington, D.C., could deal a “big, big blow” to his presidential aspirations. In September, his campaign made a plea to supporters for donations, saying if Booker did not quickly raise nearly $2 million, his campaign would have no path forward.

Notice how quick NBC News is to point out that this leaves only one black man still standing in the race for president on the Democratic side. And Patrick isn’t polling well at all, so it won’t be long before he’s out too.

But I thought Democrats were the party of diversity?

What’s funny is that it’s starting to look like, based on recent polling, that the Democratic primary may end up being between the two oldest and whitest men running, Biden and Sanders. It’s not over yet, so we’ll have to wait and see how it pans out with the woman and the gay guy still running.
