FOX 4 NEWS – The suspect involved in a stabbing incident that left one person dead this morning is now in custody, according to the Austin Police Department. Three people were injured and one person was killed, according to the Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services.
First responders were dispatched to the 500 block of South Congress Avenue around 8:30 a.m. on Friday, January 3 for a stabbing incident. When officers arrived on the scene, they made contact with four victims with stab wounds.
One of the victims, a man in his twenties, was pronounced dead at the scene. A male in his fifties has been transported to a local trauma center with serious, potentially life-threatening, injuries. Two additional patients are being treated and prepped for transport.
It is unclear at this time what led up to this incident.
WTOL reports that attack happened at a restaurant after the man was detained by civilians outside the restaurant:
Before the stabbing started, the suspect was detained by civilians outside of the business, KVUE’s Tony Plohetski has confirmed. The suspect was able to get away from the civilians before running back inside the business and randomly stabbing people, Plohetski said.
The suspect then got on top of the restaurant’s roof and jumped from the top, Plohetski confirmed. The man is now in serious condition at a hospital.
Here’s what Plohetski tweeted about the attack:
I’m told that incident began w/ despondent man who was detained by civilians. He then ran inside business and started stabbing.

Officials say man then accessed roof of building and jumped and is now in critical condition.

He also tweeted that authorities believe this was a random attack. I’ll have more on this when it becomes available…
MAJOR UPDATE: We now know the identity of the suspect, whose name is John Aguilar. He is a homeless/transient person in Austin with a violent criminal history. Greg Abbott tweeted about this twice today, blaming Austin’s reckless homeless policies:
When all facts are revealed I bet you’ll learn that the killer was a homeless man with prior arrests.
If so Austin’s reckless homeless policy puts lives in danger to murders like this.
Austin leaders must answer for their perilous policies.https://t.co/LftWzOAaKg

Exactly.
This murder must be condemned by Austin leaders.
An innocent person lost their life this morning at a restaurant & others injured
The City of Austin must ensure its homeless policy doesn’t endanger the lives of innocent people—AND the lives of the homeless. https://t.co/pza3KoD4OG

Essentially what happened was Aguilar hit an older man in the back of the head with an object in his hand at Bennu Coffee Shop. Customers tried to hold him until police arrived, but he escaped and ran into Freebirds World Burrito where he was reportedly employed. There, he stabbed two people, one of whom died. He then ran on top of the building and jumped (or fell) off, where he injured himself and had to be transported to the hospital. You can read more about it here…
