[UPDATE: “This is still catch and release”] – Gov Abbott empowers Texas law enforcement to catch and return illegals to the border…

Governor Abbott has just signed an executive order empowering both the Texas Department of Safety and the Texas National Guard to both apprehend and return illegal immigrants to the border.

Here’s the announcement:

I wondered exactly what Abbott meant by returning illegals ‘to the border’, so I looked up the actual text of the executive order and here’s what it says:

They key part is “apprehending immigrants who cross the border between ports of entry or commit other violations of federal law, and to return those illegal immigrants to the border at a port of entry.”

In other words it’s NOT going to be a ’round em up’ campaign, which I’m sure is exactly what the media will claim. Nor will it be deportation.

It plainly says that illegals who are caught crossing the border “between ports of entry” or those already in the state who violate federal laws other than just illegally crossing the border, that they can be arrested and taken back to the border at a port of entry.

In other words, they are going to make these illegals Biden’s problem. Note that this is similar to the earlier order that allowed Texas officials to drive illegals, voluntarily, by bus to Washington DC. This is essentially the same thing, but instead of taking them to the Washington DC they are taking them back to the border and it’s NOT voluntary.

Get ready for a lawsuit from the DOJ to try and stop Abbott from doing this.

UPDATE: Ken Cuccinelli and Russ Vought, who were hoping Abbott would make a Declaration of Invasion, has put out a statement criticizing this move by Abbott as nothing more than catch and release:
