Mitch McConnell is fighting back with Senate Democrats over their obstruction by cancelling the recess scheduled for the month of August:

BOOM! There ya go. I guess Republicans still have a little fight left in them.
Also, the fiscal year ends on September 30, so based on his statement McConnell plans to use that time to get appropriation (spending) bills passed before the end of September. That probably means that cancelling this recess is somewhat related to trying to get significant things done before the midterm election.
