The Republican-controlled North Carolina Senate just passed a new congressional map that should net Republicans with one more seat in Congress, according to the Washington Post.
The state house still has to pass it this week, but that should be just as easy.
Here’s the news:
Republican state senators in North Carolina approved redrawing the state’s congressional map Tuesday in hopes of gaining another U.S. House seat, heeding President Donald Trump’s request to help protect their narrow majority in next year’s midterm elections.
The state Senate adopted the map Tuesday and the state House is expected to sign off on it this week. Under the state constitution Gov. Josh Stein (D) does not have the power to veto the measure, leaving Democrats with few options but to sue to try to stop the new map from taking effect.
In North Carolina, Republicans hold 10 of the state’s 14 districts, and the new map would give Republicans a good shot at winning another. The district held by Rep. Don Davis (D-North Carolina) already leans 3 percentage points toward Republicans, and the new map would give the GOP an 11-point advantage in that district.
You can be sure that Democrats will sue, and we’ll just have to see how the courts handle this.
