Here’s what this is all about via the Independent:
Israel’s attorney-general intends to indict Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on graft charges, according to Israeli media, dealing a damning blow to the premier ahead of crucial, closely watched general elections.
Avichai Mandelblit is set to charge the embattled leader in three corruption cases, dubbed 1000, 2000 and 4000, pending a hearing, which would mark the first time in Israeli history that a serving prime minister is indicted.
Mr Netanyahu, 69, who is hoping to secure a fourth consecutive term in office, has repeatedly denied the charges. The night before the announcement he called the cases against him “ridiculous”, and in a last-minute bid Thursday morning, his Likud party submitted a petition to the High Court to delay the decision.
In Case 4000, police alleged that Mr Netanyahu granted regulatory favours to Israel’s leading telecommunications company, Bezeq, in return for more positive coverage on Walla, a news website belonging to Bezeq’s owner Shaul Elovitch. The attorney general indicted him for bribery, fraud and breach of trust. Mr Netanyahu’s wife Sara was also embroiled in the accusations.
In Case 1000 he was indicted for allegedly receiving gifts from Hollywood mogul Arnon Milchan and Australian businessman James Packer, in return for political favours.
Case 2000,Mr Netanyahu is accused of negotiating a deal with the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper to limit the coverage of rival newspaper Israel Hayom, in return for better coverage. The attorney general also announced plans to charge Arnon Mozes, Yedioth Ahronoth’s publisher.
This is all happening just two months before Israel’s elections in April, where Netanyahu and his party are on the ballot.
Mark Levin explained all of this last night on his show and says the charges against Netanyahu are really just ‘mickey mouse’ and ‘pathetic’.
