President Trump is repudiating a fake news story from the Atlantic tonight that accused him of calling John McCain a loser after he died and became ‘furious’ when the White House lowered the American flag half-staff for his death. It also accuses Trump of calling 1,800 marines “suckers” for getting killed or something. Of course, all of their reporting was based on anonymous sources.
Below is Trump’s forceful repudiation:
I was never a big fan of John McCain, disagreed with him on many things including ridiculous endless wars and the lack of success he had in dealing with the VA and our great Vets, but the lowering of our Nations American Flags, and the first class funeral he was given by our….

In case the tweets don’t show up, here’s what Trump said in full:
I was never a big fan of John McCain, disagreed with him on many things including ridiculous endless wars and the lack of success he had in dealing with the VA and our great Vets, but the lowering of our Nation’s American Flags, and the first class funeral he was given by our country, had to be approved by me, as President, & I did so without hesitation or complaint. This is more made up Fake News given by disgusting & jealous failures in a disgraceful attempt to influence the 2020 Election!
Now that you see Trump’s statement, here’s what the Atlantic accused him of…
When President Donald Trump canceled a visit to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery near Paris in 2018, he blamed rain for the last-minute decision, saying that “the helicopter couldn’t fly” and that the Secret Service wouldn’t drive him there. Neither claim was true.
Trump rejected the idea of the visit because he feared his hair would become disheveled in the rain, and because he did not believe it important to honor American war dead, according to four people with firsthand knowledge of the discussion that day. In a conversation with senior staff members on the morning of the scheduled visit, Trump said, “Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers.” In a separate conversation on the same trip, Trump referred to the more than 1,800 marines who lost their lives at Belleau Wood as “suckers” for getting killed.
Trump remained fixated on McCain, one of the few prominent Republicans to continue criticizing him after he won the nomination. When McCain died, in August 2018, Trump told his senior staff, according to three sources with direct knowledge of this event, “We’re not going to support that loser’s funeral,” and he became furious, according to witnesses, when he saw flags lowered to half-staff. “What the fuck are we doing that for? Guy was a fucking loser,” the president told aides. Trump was not invited to McCain’s funeral. (These sources, and others quoted in this article, spoke on condition of anonymity. The White House did not return earlier calls for comment, but Alyssa Farah, a White House spokesperson, emailed me this statement shortly after this story was posted: “This report is false. President Trump holds the military in the highest regard. He’s demonstrated his commitment to them at every turn: delivering on his promise to give our troops a much needed pay raise, increasing military spending, signing critical veterans reforms, and supporting military spouses. This has no basis in fact.”)
This is contradictory to everything we’ve seen and heard from Trump and about him as president. Not only has he visited soldiers in the hospital, he’s gone out of his way to praise and thank them. He’s visited them overseas in surprise visits on holidays where they long to be home. This just doesn’t compute, for normal people. But those on the left who hate Trump eat this up because they believe Trump is truly evil.
But it wasn’t just Trump who came out and repudiated this story. Keith Kellogg, who we saw at the RNC was among the first to call this story garbage:
The Atlantic story is completely false. Absolutely lacks merit. I’ve been by the President’s side. He has always shown the highest respect to our active duty troops and veterans with utmost respect paid to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice and those wounded in battle.

And Sarah Huckabee, who was there:
The Atlantic story on @realDonaldTrump is total BS. I was actually there and one of the people part of the discussion – this never happened. I have sat in the room when our President called family members after their sons were killed in action and it was heart-wrenching…
— Sarah Huckabee Sanders (@SarahHuckabee) September 4, 2020
These were some of the moments I witnessed the President show his heart and demonstrate how much he respects the selfless and courageous men and women of our military. I am disgusted by this false attack.
— Sarah Huckabee Sanders (@SarahHuckabee) September 4, 2020
And Dan Scavino who was also there:
I was with POTUS in France, with Sarah, and have been at his side throughout it all. Complete lies by “anonymous sources” that were “dropped” just as he begins to campaign (and surge). A disgraceful attempt to smear POTUS, 60 days before the Presidential Election! Disgusting!! https://t.co/mQfCNUlyZm
— Dan Scavino (@DanScavino) September 4, 2020
And Trump’s former ‘body man’ Jordan Karem was also there:
Again, this is 100% false. I was next to @POTUS the whole day! The President was greatly disappointed when told we couldn’t fly there. He was incredibly eager to honor our Fallen Heroes. https://t.co/8YZlWS83I3
— Jordan Karem (@JordanKarem1) September 4, 2020
Kayleigh McEnany also weighed in as well:
I see President @realDonaldTrump consistently express his heartfelt gratitude and absolute admiration for our brave men and women in uniform.
Just yesterday, he was truly humbled to be in the presence of our courageous World War II veterans.
This Atlantic story is garbage!

So there you have it. There story will now go away, right? Wrong. The media doesn’t care about facts. Mark Hemingway makes a great point in his response to a Never Trumper who is in glee that the AP just CONFIRMED the story:
When CNN reported DJT Jr. got the Wikileaks emails in advance, two other major news orgs confirmed the story.
The story was dead wrong and they were all using the same anonymous source. Media either need to start demanding names or exercising more restraint. https://t.co/DqOH70KQCG

Well said, but it won’t matter. The media will sensationalize this story for days to come because they have to stop the momentum shift of voters to Trump, which has the media and Democrats in complete PANIC MODE. That’s why they chose something very core and meaningful to people on the right, our love of our troops and veterans. It really is disgusting.
