The Supreme Court has rejected a new Alabama congressional map because they claim it diluted the Black vote too much:
Dave Wasserman writes: “In a major surprise, Supreme Court rules 5-4 that Alabama’s congressional map dilutes Black voting strength. This could reverberate to LA, SC and/or GA, forcing creation of 2-4 new Black majority districts and netting Dems 2-4 seats.”

As you can see the vote was 5-4, with both Roberts and Kavanaugh joining the minority.
Justice Thomas says “These cases “are yet another installment in the ‘disastrous misadventure’ of this Court’s voting rights jurisprudence.””
He adds “At the outset, I would resolve these cases in a way that would not require the Federal Judiciary to decide the correct racial apportionment of Alabama’s congressional seats”
You can read his full opinion here, which starts on page 46. Thomas was joined by both Gorsuch and Barrett and, in part, Alito.
