MAJOR UPDATE: Grenell got the job:
I am pleased to announce that our highly respected Ambassador to Germany, @RichardGrenell, will become the Acting Director of National Intelligence. Rick has represented our Country exceedingly well and I look forward to working with him. I would like to thank Joe Maguire….

It’s being reported by the New York Times that Trump is expected to name Richard Grenell, current ambassador to Germany, as acting Director of National Intelligence:
Trump Expected to Name @RichardGrenell as Acting Head of Intelligence
The move would place a Trump loyalist atop the intelligence agencies long viewed skeptically by the White House.

Here’s more from the NY Times:
President Trump was expected to name Richard Grenell, the American ambassador to Germany, to be the acting director of national intelligence, two people familiar with the matter said on Wednesday.
Mr. Grenell, whose outspokenness throughout his career as a political operative and then as ambassador has prompted criticism, is a vocal Trump loyalist who will lead a group of national security agencies often viewed skeptically by the White House.
He would take over from Joseph Maguire, who has served as the acting director of national intelligence since the resignation last summer of Dan Coats, a former Republican senator from Indiana. Mr. Grenell, who has pushed to advance gay rights in his current post, would apparently also be the first openly gay cabinet member.
Mr. Grenell did not respond to a request for comment, nor did a White House spokesman. The people familiar with the move cautioned that the president had a history of changing his mind on personnel decisions after they were revealed in the news media.
I first saw Grenell on Fox News years ago as a media critic. He was very sharp then in analyzing the bias in the media and we posted some of his comments here.
He’s been the US ambassador to Germany for almost two years now. Before that, with respect to the government, he worked at the United Nations for 8 years under Bush. I’m sure Grenell is a capable guy, but I don’t know how this qualifies him for the top intelligence job in the nation. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
UPDATE: According to Sean Davis, Grenell would have tons of experience for the job from his current position as Ambassador to Germany:
Great pick. As U.S. ambassador to the country with the largest economy in the EU, Grenell has a ton of successful experience coordinating intel and national security policy. https://t.co/g4FeREjGMB

Lee Zeldin likes him for the job too:
A great Patrot, exceptional Ambassador, and amazing selection to be the US’ next Acting Director of National Intelligence, Ambassador @RichardGrenell! Congratulations!!

Hugh Hewitt does as well:
Critics of appointment of @RichardGrenell must have done better than he has in pressuring Germany to move towards NATO’s 2% goal or getting Kosovo and Serbia to an actual agreement? Ric has a great record of success abroad and at U.N. The Left despises him b/c he’s effective.
