Trump has just filed a lawsuit against House Democrats and NY state officials to block the release of his tax returns:
AXIOS – President Trump on Tuesday filed a lawsuit against the House Ways and Means Committee, New York Attorney General Letitia James and New York tax commissioner Michael Schmidt in an effort to block them from releasing his state tax returns.
The big picture: New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo last month signed a bill known as the TRUST Act that would permit tax officials to turn over Trump’s tax returns to any one of three congressional committees. Trump’s lawsuit alleges that the House Ways and Means Committee’s invocation of the TRUST Act would “lack a legitimate legislative purpose,” and that the law itself violates the First Amendment because it was “enacted it to discriminate and retaliate against President Trump for his speech and politics.”
The law Cuomo signed doesn’t specifically mention Trump, but I’m pretty sure Trump’s legal team can make a convincing case in court that Trump’s taxes was the very reason why this law was passed to begin with and thus unfairly targets him.
I’m all for the normal release of his taxes, but the American people clearly voted for him in 2016 without them. This attempt to force the release of his taxes is nothing more than presidential harassment and I do hope Trump beats the socks off of these lawmakers.
