BREAKING: Trump to impose sanctions on Iran’s Supreme Leader!

It’s just been announced that Trump is going to impose tough new sanctions on both Iran and their Supreme Leader:

What do you think: Are tough new sanctions an appropriate response to the destruction of our expensive unmanned drone over international waters?

  1. Still not happy Trump didn’t retaliate for the drone but I’ve been hearing Trump ordered a cyber attack on Iran. Now, he’s ordered more sanctions and that’s probably a good thing to continue. Eventually, the Mullahs will have to cry “uncle”. However, any more damage to our assets must be met with military force and hopefully Trump sees this.

    1. @agesilaos Yeah, but Iran is threatening to shoot down more drones. If they do I don’t think Trump should refrain from military strikes.

      1. Trump tore up the Obama give away to Iran and has imposed crippling sanctions, which are working. Did he not authorize some sort of cyber attack on them instead?

My take on last week’s decision by Trump not to attack the Iranians is this: He basically gave him an “off ramp” on their current behavior. He let them know where he is willing to go and gave them an opportunity to return to the table. This is his negotiating style on other subjects. I see no reason to think (as of now, at least) that he isn’t going to drop some sort of hammer on them if they don’t knock off their bullshit. I could be wrong, of course.

  2. We can get our money back for the drone going through the U.N., but they are threatening to shoot down more of them. I won’t be so understanding the next time if Trump decides to continue to handle it through sanctions.

    1. If America used Farmer’s Insurance we’d have J.K. Simmons say, “Aaaand we covered it.”

      1. @plotevil Lol, I’m almost positive no insurance company would insure a $100 million drone.

If we go through the U.N. they can legally make Iran pay for the drone….if we win…and if Iran actually pays.

Not that it excuses not striking Iran.

  3. The Supreme Leader may now have to skip his quarterly trip to Monte Carlo to gamble and participate in other hedonistic acts. (/sarc)

  4. Here’s the question I have. Suppose Iran, through whatever machinations, does get its hands on a nuke or two. Then what? I mean, they’ll have to be dealt with. Iran isn’t just going to sit on a nuke, not when they can point it at Israel.

But what would we do in response to them developing it? Is anyone in American politics prepared to make a decision that will almost certainly cost them their career?

  7. Scoop ,Trump is saying the additional sanctions on Iran were not really tied to the downing of our drone.

  8. It’s odd hearing ” sanctions on both Iran and their Supreme Leader” as in one person. He walks into a store to buy something:

Clerk: I’m am most sorry Supreme Leader but there is are addition taxes for you.
SL: What do you mean by this blasphemy? It’s a pack of gum. It should not cost $134!
Clerk: My most humble apologies your Excellence. Maybe try another snack?
SL: Fine! I’ll have the Salt and Vinegar chips.
Clerk: (Cowering) You are not allowed to purchase those anymore my leader.
SL: DAMN THOSE AMERICANS AND THEIR SANCTIONS!!!

  10. By some of the comments I see here, half of you are warmongers. America has had enough of BS wars. If you believe Iran shot down that drone, I have a bridge to sell you.

    1. I believe Iran shot down that Drone,I also believe they will be blowing up your bridges.

  11. The Washington Post reported:

In response to a reporter’s question, Trump indicated that the new sanctions were not directly connected to Iran’s downing of a U.S. drone over the Strait of Hormuz last week. “This is something that was going to happen anyway,” he said.

Trump again shot himself in the foot so to speak. By disconnecting the new sanctions from Iran’s having shot down the drone, he undermined the possibility that the new sanctions would serve as a deterrent. By stating that they would have occurred anyway, he squandered their behavioral value.

        1. @agesilaos It’s reported that Trump authorized cyber attacks, but Iran is claiming that it failed (which they would claim regardless).

I don’t read too far into backing off the military strikes other than what he said….too many people would be killed. Considering that military strikes could spark something much much bigger and it was just a drone (no soldiers’ lives were lost), I was content with going another route. People were talking about him doing nothing but I knew he’d find another way.

If Iran keeps it up though, I’m not going to be content with sanctions.
