The Democrats introduced a bill to bring back the assault weapons ban:
Reps. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) and Ted Deutch (D-Fla.) formally introduced a bill on Monday to ban assault weapons.
The legislation, called the Assault Weapons Ban of 2018, was introduced less than two weeks after the mass shooting at a Parkland, Fla., high school that left 17 people dead. The gunman used an AR-15 assault weapon during the shooting, one of the many firearms that would be banned under the bill.
The legislation would make it “unlawful for a person to import, sell, manufacture, transfer, or possess, in or affecting interstate or foreign commerce, a semiautomatic assault weapon.”
However, the ban wouldn’t apply to semi-automatic weapons that were “lawfully possessed” when the measure went into effect.
The bill also requires the attorney general to create a public record of semiautomatic assault weapons that have been used in crimes.
I really wanna see Republicans push Democrats on whether they’d actually support this bill because they KNOW the public isn’t really behind it when it’s presented rationally.
Meanwhile the Republicans will be introducing a bill on school safety pretty soon:
Stivers said the House effort will be aimed at improving safety on school campuses, but it will also include some gun-related measures as well.
“We’re gonna do a lot on school safety,” Stivers said. “Part of that’s gun stuff, but part of that’s school safety stuff.”
He also said that a bipartisan bill to improve the existing background check system — known as the Fix NICS Act — will be a part of the proposal.
The House already passed that bill last December, but only after it was paired with a contentious bill to allow people to use permits for carrying concealed weapons across state lines.
If Democrats really want to politicize this shooting, Republicans should fire right back because there’s no real public support for stricter gun control on the level that they’re screaming about.
