Donald Trump mourns the passing of ‘American war hero and true patriot’ Bob Dole.

This morning, former Senator and World War II veteran Bob Dole died at the age of 98. He was wounded fighting the Nazis in Europe, a wound that carried with him for all the rest of his long years. He was a Republican, a Senator, a presidential candidate, and ultimately even a popular culture figure.

45th President of the United States Donald Trump had a good relationship with Senator Dole. Dole called himself a Trumper, driving the press insane, and he called himself a friend of John McCain, driving other Trumpers nuts. But Dole supported Trump’s campaign and went to bat for him more than once.

We’ve all had issues with him over the years. He was never a hardliner or consistently Right enough, though he was truly conservative. On the flip side, the RINOs thought he was too friendly with hardliners and conservatives.

Dole believed in working across the aisle. He also believed in fighting tooth and nail against the other side. Like everybody he had a complicated variety of traits that made up who he was publicly and privately. But Trump liked him, as so many people did regardless of party or politics.

And Bob Dole liked Trump. (You know you heard that in his/Norm Macdonald’s voice, too, didn’t you?)

Statement by Donald J. Trump, 45th President of the United States of America

Bob Dole was an American war hero and true patriot for our Nation. He served the Great State of Kansas with honor and the Republican Party was made stronger by his service. Our Nation mourns his passing, and our prayers are with Elizabeth and his wonderful family.

Way I see it, there’s no higher Trump praise than for him to say you’re a true patriot. In all the many hundreds of nice comments, remembrances, or reserved condolences, this one stands out to me as the best description.

There are nasty jerks like MSNBC’s Medhi Hasan trashing Dole today for the crime of liking Donald Trump. But I’m not linking to them from here.

I’ll leave you with President Trump’s remarks when Dole was award the Congressional Gold Medal.

Just great. Really.
