Don’t Be Christian! The Popular Culture Shift Toward Shunning

When did we, as a nation, lose what this country was founded on? When did God become such a three letter word? Some things have been integrated into this great country since its birth, and that is one the basic concepts of our founding; in every sense a “new world”.

“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” Is that not what is written on the Statue of Liberty? Liberty! Our shores have been open to not just Christians, but Muslims, Atheists, Buddhist, Hindu, Wiccan, and any other religion, race, or creed who have landed here. However it seems that two self-identifiers have become the new black mark, the “thing not to be”: Christian.

From being forced to participate in wedding ceremonies that violate basic Christian tenets, to being sued for not subsidizing abortion, to being mocked by “the smart people” about faith versus science, Christians are more and more being looked down on and pushed out of polite society.

For example, Kevin Sorbo, who has come out of the “Christian closet”, has suffered career consequences as a result. Actor Dean Cain, best known for his role as Superman, has admitted to being conservative and supports causes that the left would consider “traditional”. That’s another one of those code words for “Christian”. Dean Cain doesn’t necessarily identify as Christian, but he does say he has a “personal relationship” with God. He has said his values have affected his roles and options.

Christianity is under attack in other ways too, especially by ridiculous fake complaints about non-existent violations of the separation of church and state (which is a general principle, not a founding guideline or law.) Atheist groups have “demanded” Governor Scott Walker (WI) retract tweets that have Biblical references or quotes. One group goes even further to sue a school district in NJ so their kids don’t have to say “under God’ in the Pledge of Allegiance. This also happened recently in Texas, where under God was replaced with “under Peace”. No seriously.

In New Jersey, a family working with one such group refuses to be identified because, get this, they think THEY will be “ostracized.” The family trying to drive people’s faith out of all public life is afraid that they will be shunned. Oh irony.

From Huffington Post:

“The American Humanist Association filed a lawsuit Saturday against New Jersey’s Matawan-Aberdeen Regional School District on behalf of a local atheist family seeking to omit the phrase “under God” from the school’s daily Pledge of Allegiance. The family, who wishes to remain anonymous for “fear of public hostility” and ‘ostracism,’ views the school-sponsored recitation of “under God” as discriminatory against secular children and their families, marginalizing them as second-class citizens/”

Here’s a far-fetched idea: don’t say the Pledge!! It is your right under the constitution, and I’m prettty sure it’s the FIRST amendment. It’s also MY first amendment right to say it! See how that works?

The war on Christianity goes on to include Obamacare, although I’m sure that’s not a surprise. From SSI:

If you are a mainstream Christian or a Jew, you need not apply to Opt Out of ObamaCare; that exemption is reserved for Muslims, Scientologists, Amish, Christian Scientists and Native American Indians who have a “conscientious objection” to surance. A conscientious objection to theft committed by rogue politicians under the color of law with the threat of violence for non-compliance isn’t sufficient in America today to exempt average Americans from the stranglehold of government.

Believe it or not, if you are a Muslim you may claim a special religious exemption to Obama-Care that is denied to main-stream Christians and Jews. Or if you prefer a New-Age religion to Islam, you may become a Scientologist and Opt Out of ObamaCare’s mandatory purchase of health insurance. Or, if you happen to be of Native American Indian extraction you too can opt out of the insurance laws by which everyone else in America must abide.

Christianity and faith in God have become reason to be mocked and, more rarely, outright shunned. It’s more acceptable to be ANYTHING other than Christian in today’s popular culture, where we are seen as, and treated as, out-of-touch oppressors, hate speakers, or as the TV scientists like Bill Nye love to say “ignorant.” What happened to freedom of religion? What happened to respect and tolerance of other people’s beliefs and cultures? Why does that apply to everyone but our own citizens practicing the faith this nation was founded on??

Maybe you don’t believe “in God we trust” and that’s fine; but don’t tell me I can’t. I will not turn my back on my God, and if I must be punished for that, so be it. And to people like Kevin Sorbo and Dean Cain, who have big voices and famous faces, keep up the good work. Or should I say, God’s work.
