First it was horrible text messages about assassinating the House Republican Speaker a few years ago. Now we learn that Democratic candidate for Attorney General of Virginia, Jay Jones, may have lied to the court about community service he was supposed to have served after
Here’s more from the Daily Caller:
Democrat Virginia attorney general candidate Jay Jones is reportedly under investigation for allegedly misrepresenting details regarding community service to a New Kent County court.
A special prosecutor was appointed to investigate Jones after allegations that the candidate was misrepresenting details around his community service hours for his reckless driving conviction to the court, the National Review reported Wednesday. New Kent County Commonwealth’s Attorney Scott Renick requested to be recused from the investigation, citing a potential conflict of interest, according to a court filing obtained by the outlet.
Judge Elliott Bondurant accepted his request Tuesday and named Nathan Green, the Commonwealth’s Attorney for James City County, to serve as special prosecutor. Commonwealth’s attorneys frequently request recusals if there are possible conflicts of interest, the outlet reported.
Jones was convicted in 2022 of reckless driving in New Kent County after being stopped for driving 116 mph in a 70 mph zone. He was ordered to pay a $1,500 fine and conduct 1,000 hours of community service. Jones claimed to have completed 500 of those hours for his own political action committee, Meet Our Moment (MOM), according to a report. He logged the remaining 500 hours for the NAACP Virginia State Conference.
Renick previously told the Caller that the state considers community service to be “unpaid service or labor performed through any non-political, charitable non-profit.”
The certificates, signed by representatives from both the NAACP and MOM, state that Jones completed more than 500 hours of service for each organization in 2023, the National Review reported. To meet that claim inside a single year, Jones would have needed to spend approximately ten hours per week on MOM activities and another ten hours on NAACP work while also maintaining a full-time position at the law firm Hogan Lovells, according to the outlet.
During the same period, social media posts allegedly show Jones traveling across Virginia campaigning for other Democratic candidates.
Renick focused on the hours Jones claimed to have completed for MOM, ABC7 reported. “It’s supposed to be something where you’re giving back to the community,” Renick told the outlet earlier this month.
