Elon Musk revealed tonight that it boggled his mind to learn how many government agencies had access to people’s direct messages on Twitter.
In response to that, Musk announced to Tucker Carlson that he will begin allowing users to encrypt their direct messages on the fly so that even he won’t know what’s being said between any two people, much less the government.

Musk said they’ll be rolling out this feature in the next month or two and that users can toggle encryption on or off, depending on their preference.
He added that the true test of the encryption’s privacy is if someone put a gun to his head, would he be able to tell anyone what was said in an encrypted DM? He says the answer is no, that no one at Twitter will be able to read encrypted DMs.
Tucker asked him if anyone in the government has complained about it to him. Musk said no, not directly but he has heard things indirectly.
He noted that many officials don’t like to complain to him directly because he might tweet about it, LOL!
